complete amateur DIY overheating

I think it all depends what you're used to. The biggest perceived speed increase I've ever had was when I moved from E8400 to i7. Everything just runs very, very snappily. The laptop i7 - whilst fast - is noticeably slower than my main machine even though it ranks at 6000 odd on that benchmark. I'm sure the next upgrade (in a couple of years) will be a similar jump and I'll wondered how I managed with what I have now :shrug:

maybe in an ideal world we would love the best but i know i never will be able to afford it,(out of interest what is a ruff figure of cost you machine) dont have to answer, mine a couple years old well probably more like 5.
not only that just cheacked my cpu temp on the bios and its goes between 35 and 37, just realised i didnt have cool and quiet on to.
now core temp says my cores are running at 40 and 48

As I build my own, I only needed to replace motherboard, CPU, memory and CPU heatsink. I also added an SSD too and reused everything else (case, PSU, HDDs, DVD drive, monitors, keyboard etc...). That all cost about £600 from memory but looking at the price of memory and the fact the processor is cheaper now, I'd probably be spending £500 for the same spec.

I know there's a couple of people around here who have built a similar system and every one of them has been impressed. Once you start dealing with 20+Mpix raw files, the processing power becomes very important and noticeable.

went into see Strathaven Computers
''bring it in tomorrow'' and he will BLOW out all the dust out of the CPU fan and heat-sink [says it works a treat]

gave me a new fan to fit into the PSU - in case mine was a bit 'cooked' after the fan stalling

said i didn't need an extra case fan
[since noticed a large mesh area on the rear cover so lotsa room to expel air...:bonk:

got home - the PC had been idle ALL afternoon having finished a Full Run AV check while i was at work
temp 1 was 39C.....now up to 51C whilst working

have also run PC Wizard 2010; the Processor temps are
core#1 = 25.5C
core#2 = 25.5C

TMPIN0 is 51C
TMPIN1 is 34C

soooooo..no need for a new PC i feel

If you're going to replace a fan, it would be easier and safer IMO, to replace the whole PSU, everything is self explanatory these days and if you have your camera to hand, take a picture before unplugging anything, so you have a reference to plug it all back in again, ATX connectors like molex are keyed and cannot be plugged in backwards, unless forced, in which damage will be caused, but if you take your time, its very easy to do and you won't have to pay anyone to do it, the only cost is the PSU :thumbs:

Like Andy, I also build my own systems, the i7 950 I built not too long ago only cost around £300, as I only bought the mobo, processor and memory, but compared to the core 2 duo e8400 (that I overclocked to 4.2GHz), it was a vast improvement, the OS and programs seemed to run smoother, unless that was the placebo effect kicking in :)

ok not to bad, my systems are all built by my dad, and to be honest both of my pcs have cost not alot, maybe next year i will look into upgrading i suppose new cpu, new mb, new ram,,

im sure my system handles the 5dmk2 raw files with no probs that i have downloaded, and mine is only a 5000+ dual core 2.6ghz, running 8gb ram, nvidia gforce 1gb graphics card.(but then i recon its 5 years old):lol:

I'm 110% sure you'd notice quite a big difference with a second gen i7 - especially if it's overclocked (very easy). Everything is much, much snappier (and that's coming from an E8400 like Rob which, on paper, is more powerful than your 5000+)

i know your right and looking at some of the intel proccesors man there pricy, the next one i was looking at was maybe an amd 4 core 3.6ghz(black) or a 6 core 2.8which are around £120, and the i5 3.3ghz at £162, but then the i7s arnt to much more like the i7 2600 3.4ghz.
but for now i will just have to cope.

absolutely, even my old quad Q9550 regularly maxed out in lightroom working with 5Dmk2 files. i7 doesnt break a sweat.

AMD can't compete with Intel at the high end at the moment. Their latest 8-core bulldozer processor was a disappointment - you'd be better off with an i7 for a variety of reasons. Where they do compare is in cost for performance. If you're OK with a current mid-range PC, they are a good choice. They aren't as power efficient though - so it will cost more to run them.

My current recommendation is i7-2500k or i7-2600k (preferred) together with a P67 or Z68 motherboard. The processor k suffix means they have an unlocked multiplier and they can EASILY be overclocked by 15% (change one number in the BIOS) for a free boost in performance. The CPUperformance.net benchmark runs at 11100 on my overclocked i7-2600k whereas it shows 10000 on the page itself (i.e. in non-overclocked systems).

Be interesting to see what Intel announce early next year (although it should just be evolutionary rather than revolutionary).

i cam see what your saying and on the stats the i5 2500 or 2500k would be about the price i would be looking at but by the time a upgrade maybe the i7 will have dropped, but in the real world do you really see the diffference for the price you pay, will have to read that site and see how test are done as there are lots of factors to take into account as you well know and some cpus work better with different bits.

I'd MUCH rather edit things on the i7 desktop (that scores 11000 on those tests) than the i7 laptop (that scores 6500 on those tests). Take from that what you will... If you have nothing else to compare it to, the laptop is fine, but it's not as good as a faster processor.

well thats a big difference between the 2, and i will say i have never thought about the intels before but reading up they do look impressive and i would love an i7(so who knows maybe one day) for now i will just keep using my amd desktops and laptop.
but the i5 2500k looks good for the price adn does well considering its in the top 50 and above alot dear processors.

thanks - the HP air hose has removed lotsa dust, - fans both start/spin with no problem

i now have a spare fan for the PSU should it fail - so will run for a few days monitoring the temps

What's the problem with that? Too high? Too low (remember, it is being compared against server processors too)?

Yup... AMD are king of the low cost, mid-performance machine. Just sort on value for money (CPU value) and it's no 2... It is, however, still 127 on the list......

so from that its beeter than say a new phenom 960t.
Well the Phenom was released Q3/10 so is 15 months old now... The Athlon was released in Aug and is a new core compared to the other Athlons...
 
1......about 3feet away - fixed wall mounted

2......AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+ 2.81 GHz

now running at 55C - if that the CPU temp

3...only fans are on CPU and PSU

RHS side of the case is blank
the LHS has 2 drilled areas

A...about 8cm circular - bolted inside this is a funnel directing air to the CPU fan

B...a 10cm square area below this
i did assume this was the 'exhaust' because there are no other Vents
[and the PSU sucks air IN rather than blowing OUT]

but Area B does have 4 drilled holes at the corners [ for a fan.?] but i'd be unsure where to pick up a supply.:thinking:

edit so case is at a positive pressure if i add a case fan in the square - or can you get a fan which sucks hot air out.

I'm running the same processor as you John, totally budget system but it works really nicely for me. Running it on an ASRock mb with 2gb Geil Black Dragon Ram and a ATI 4670 512mb graphics card.

My old PSU gave up the ghost, and as I also fancied a new case decided on a budget combo, so bought one of these for £24;

really good budget combo and temps rarely go above 37 degrees whilst downloading and photoshop use, and that is running the cooler fan at 40% (no other case fans in use)

I was advised to increase RAM to 4GB - cheap enough

my graphics are presently on the MB

had considered a separate graphics card so will look at the ATI link.....:thumbs:
