complete crap my pants moment today

Ar$ing about on a 5th floor penthouse balcony of a friend of my parents, trying to photograph Canary Wharf (CW is about 250 yds away from their pad, which is also right on the river!) and a huge thud noise..... and the tripod went light!..... Fortunately the tripod was tilted backwards so a 4 ft fall, had it been forwards about a 60ft fall!!!)

Gingerly picked it up (swear I had screwed it on tight) and expecting the worst....... fired off a few and played with settings and examined by looking close - good news is it seems the total damage is a scuff to the body (battlescar! ) and the lens hood had cracked..... Bit of superglue and it's as good as new...... though I did get the Spanish Inquisition at the co-op as to why a 36 yr old male was buying Tonic water, lemon, ice and superglue...

"Well I already have the Gin, and I am going to mend something I broke. If I was buying it to sniff, then I wouldn't as this is now solvent free, but if it wasn't then I wouldn't tell you I was buying it to sniff glue would I , because if I did, then you would refuse to sell it to me. Make your mind up quick as this ice is melting!" was a very unhappy bunny, as needed to check the pics on a real sized screen.

I know that heart in mouth feeling well! My camera on tripod fell forward indoors but as I had not tightened the panning 'axis' much, the camera turned as it fell, so it took the impact by turning... I hadn't had the camera long and thought there was a problem when there was always a slight shift in the viewfinder when I focus locked. As it turned out, its does that normally because of VR so that was a huge relief!
Have you tried seeing what the view would be like lit up in the evening or night?

yep was a scary time stopping still ....oh crap moment, esp as the impact knocked the EV up to +2, which i didnt notice, until looking at the settings after staring at the images on the screen...... thinking - ah it's dead!
