Last Wednesday I bought the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and popped on down to Marwell and the Hawk Centre and got some shots I was happy with. I got home from work and the light looked pretty good and could hear the birds chirping pretty loudly so thought I would go try my luck while there was some light left and am not sure the lens is working properly!

When I used it at Marwell it was silent as could be and would lock on pretty quickly with AF, this evening theres a noise which I'm having trouble thinking of a description when the lens is in motion (focussing), it's almost like a quite windy noise, I have tried this inside and out, tried rebooting the camera and still the same, it also seems slower to lock on!

I have tried my other lenses and they all seem fine.

The camera does not leave the house and lives in it's bag apart from when it's around my neck being supported by my hand, for me it's an expensive piece of kit and I take care of my stuff!

Does thisd sound like a fault or am I being paranoid! I did buy the lens new so worst case scenario I can pop into Jessops on Wednesday and get them to check it over!

Help...

Sounds like the IS working to me... trying turning it off and see if the noise you hear goes away...

It does indeed only make the sound when IS is turned on! Is it supposed to sound like that and is it me being paranoid ???

Can you tell I'm new to this lol :)

Please tell me I'm being paranoid!

You are being paranoid, the IS is meant to make a slight sound when it is on, mine does anyway.

You want to hear the IS on the Sigma 150-500 I think my washing machine is quieter! :D

You probably did not notice the IS noise whilst outside last time but maybe in your current location it was more noticable.

We all go through the same thing when we get something new, I felt the same when I first got this lens, now look at it - I can hear it working so I know everythings fine :)

Hope you enjoy your new lens

It is quite noisy on the 70-300 IS compared to some of the other Canon lenses I have used, but then again its one of the later and more effective IS designs whereas things like the 300 f4 IS is pretty feeble by comparison.

Anyway, don't worry, carry on shooting!
