best iso depends on your camera and your lens and the available lighting.. your question cant be answered without a lot more info from you :)

ideal lens depends on distance you are from stage and what make your camera is ...

OK my camera is an olympus E-410 < what info shall I give you

Re lighting, I'm not sure waht stage lighting they're using, I'll ask later

Distance from the stage, very close as I'm going to 'shoot' a friends band just for fun really.

where ya shooting?
always good fun.
often end up shooting bl ody high iso at gigs.
a local venue i shoot a lot is so dark its wide open at 3200 an f2.8. but that is extreme.

It's just at a local pub
I'll play around with the ISO I just wanted a bit of advice on where to start, just so that I don't spend the majority of the time playing about. It's quite a dark venue really but they'll have a decent set up with lighting so the subjects *should* be well lit

High ISO isnt really that neccesary, Ive done plenty of pub gigs and just use a low shutter speed of about 1/20th (presuming you have steady hands), ISO I normally dont go about 640 I think it is, aperture as low as possible and I also use rear curtain sync on the flash quite low powered.

If you're close, slow-sync flash might be favourite.

600-800 iso as a rough starting point id say, can fiddle with it if needed, f2.8 is awesome for gigs but it depends on your lens, ive just moved to a 28-70 2.8 and love it :D

james 1/20th? jeez. you must be dead.i get shake at 1.60 sometimes.
handheld, most people struggle for a sharp shot at 1/60.
agreed , the club i shoot is exceptionaly dark.
8oo is probably a better bet for pubs.as a starting point.
use the lowest iso you can get away with, and still keep around 1/60 to 1/80.
even if you have to run at max appeture.
what is that one your camera rachp?
flash will work if your close, but tends to kill the mood a little. try without if you can.
