I'm covering a schools wind band workshop on Friday in our local theatre (it's my band that's running it). The workshop will take place on the theatre stage and I've asked for the stage lighting to be on so it'll be well lit (static lighting, no moving fixtures, no chasing lights). My question's simple enough, should I use a hood when shooting? given that the lighting will be from powerful spotlights from all angles. I'll be shooting with my 55-200 and 14-42. I'm guessing I won't need a hood on the 55-200, but what about the 14-42?

Why would you NOT use a hood? Each lens has a hood designed especially for it - I cannot see any reason why not to use it. The only occasions I have not fixed the hood on any of my lenses has been either in the interests of trying to remain as unobtrusive as possible or in the interests of time - "quick get camera out" type scenarios.

Absolutely use the hood! It will reduce the flare from the lights and if you drop your lens you'll have no one to blame for the bill but yourself. Consider it a condom for your lens ;)

That was my thinking,

thanks for the responses.
