confused about a lens, and the price 55-250

Hi there.

Just a little confused about a certain lens, the 55-250.

I've seen this one ebay

which says its 4 - 5.6, but i've also seen 4.5 - 5.6, now is that the same thing, or is there such a thing as a different one, or is this one people normally refer to?

Reason im confused is, on ebay they seem to be about £130, but on amazon, they range from about £140 - £250 and im wondering why there such a difference between the cost(on new items)..

Am i missing something important about this lens?
 
i dont have the knowledge of canon lens regardind specs but you will find that several [many] sellers on eBay are a bit dodgy about warranty repairs

they import the lens, sell to you - so any warranty probs YOU have, then THEY have to return to manufacturer so LONG delays

do lotsa research before you buy on eBay ..!

BTW...it's ''lens'' not lens............:D
 
Are you sure you're not confusing the 50-250 which are all f4-5.6 and have two different versions hence price difference (excluding retailers that will sell the first version at full rrp) with the 50-200 which is f4.5-5.6 and an EF lens?

Not used the 50-200 but I have heard it's not that good but could be heresay:shrug:

I have used the original 50-250 and for what it is it's a good lens. Not used the new version so don't know if it's worth the extra- for the price you may as well go a bit extra and get the 70-300.
If you're looking for a bit extra range and don't want to spend a lot then you could do a lot worse than just buying one and using it.
 
The Canon 55-250 is an f4-5.6. There is no other Canon 55-250. Re. prices I have no idea, except that WEX want £329 for one!

Ahh thanks for the advice, theres also a site, pixel something that has examples of the 55-250 with the 4/5.5 and the 4.5-5.6 so that threw me a little..

There are Mk1 and Mk2 versions of the 55-250mm IS both are definately f4-5.6. That COULD explain the price diference. The main difference between the two Mk's seems to be mostly cosmetic. Didn't know they were available in the UK yet.

Mk1's are around the 140-170 quid price. Not seen a Mk 2 for sale yet!

There you go! a Mk1 with free delivery for £136!

(The Mk2s are £210)

The Warehouse Express lens is the MK II lens. I have the MK1 lens and from what I have read the only differences are cosmetic to match the new 18-55mm IS MKII and the cosmetic changes to the 600D.

The 55-250mm IS MK1 lens is very good and I would not be concerned about the image quality from it. I bought mine from Hong Kong when I was there in February for about £140.

However, if you are willing to spend £330 on a lens, you are nearly in second hand 70-200mm F4L territory, this is a very good lens and a decent step up from the 55-250mm IS in image quality. It just depends how much you want to spend. If you want to spend less than £150 you will not get a better telephoto zoom.
 
Sigma 70-300 ..? must be the APO version though

no IS but reportedly a good lens

Yes there is.. There are 2 canon 55-250 is lenses. There's the first one with the silver ring around the numbers and the one with the black ring which is the more expensive one as it has slightly better coated glass and panning IS.

The mk1 has panning IS too and exacty the same optics and coatings. There is absolutely no difference between the mk1 and mk2 except the outer cosmetics.

Underneath the only slightly updated exterior they are the very same lens. They only released the mk2 to bring the cosmetics in line with the newer EFS lenses such as the 18-135 and 15-85.

No, that's wrong. Internally they are both the same lens. The link below says it all:

The 55-250mm has a very good reputation, particularly at its price point, and it's an f4.0 - 5.6. I think any confusion is probably the result of a misprint, or possibly misreading?

I had a look on the Amazon site and they seem to be selling the older version at £145.20 (with a couple of used ones at £130) and the newer one at £213.14, with both listed at £329.99 RRP. Forget about this, a lot of advertisers quote RRP to emphasise their discount and you don't normally have to pay it for popular lenses.

I'd go with Amazon. They're pretty solid in my experience, and I've never had a problem with any of their marketplace sellers either. Some people like eBay, I don't. Returns and warranties are a lot more straightforward with Amazon, or you could ask Kerso (Ian Kerr) for a quote. He has an eBay presence, but also supplies through his outlet in Fife. I bought my 70-200mm f4.0 from him and the process was flawless.
