I know these have a good rep, but wondered what else in the price range works?

I'm looking at a Dell refurbed one for £170 on the bay.
 
Nowt else in that price range with that quality screen. I though about one but spent more on a U2410 instead. Its bigger, has a full colour gamut and once calibrated is superb!
 
Be aware that most of the 'refurbished' stock on Fleabay are in fact seconds. Most have more than the acceptable amout of dead pixels.

I have 2208WA's and they are great screens

Well, I've just bought one. If it's crap they'll get my foot in their arse.
 
When I was looking for a 2209WA on the bay, I think most if not all listings stated whether or not there were dead pixels. If it didn't say, I would have asked first but seen as you just bought it hope you get a good un! Getting an eIPS screen was a great decision, the colours are just way more accurate (along with all the other features).

The seller I bought off has several thousand ratings at 100% so I should be safe.
 
Just had email response from them to say the screen will be perfect and if it isn't they'll pick it up and replace it FOC. All good. :)
 
Does anyone have experience of the the 2209WA and how it compares to say the 2410?

I ask this as I have been reading that the 2209WA is an e-IPS panel compared to the normal IPS for the 2410.

It indicates that the e(economy)IPS maybe does not perform as well as the "normal" IPS panle screens.

Any views?

I have just got the U2410 and having a few struggles with it.

Firstly, they do have some quality issues (some of them at least have a well described green/pink tint issues - check the Dell forums).

Then, the factory calibration is really rubbish with the DeltaE being around 5-6 (which means that the colours could deviate within that delta so the deviation will be visible to eye).

The most problematic however for most people is that it is impossible to accurately calibrate the wide gamut modes with colorimeters (they need a special correction matrix applied in a software and so far I think only iColor Display does something of the kind). Technically the only modes you could calibrate with colorimeter would be AdobeRGB and sRGB - but this won't be utilizing full wide gamut of this monitor. The wide gamut modes like custom and standard (full montor's gamut) require and are best calibrated with spectrophotometer like i1 Pro or ColourMunki.

Also the most would be useful mode (custom - where you can adjust individual RGB gains) also seems the most useless one because of its non-linearity. This results in the profiling being mostly useless - trying to validate calibration and profile after it's done results in large delta E differences in some colours (notably green). More details about this here. Think i'll hold off for a while.

I nearly bought a u2410 at the weekend.

What I am really after is a high end 19", but there does not seem to be any made with an IPS panel. It's nearly all VA

For the DELL U2410 - the best way to calibrate that is to use Standard mode with altering RGB values via Service menu (as described here). It still needs spectrophotometer though.

Update: Just an update that above calibration method (Standard mode) seems to work perfectly. I got a calibration with average deltaE 0.28 - had not had it that low before on any of my other monitors. Screenshot with profile validation:

I calibrated my U2410 in custom with a spyder 3 pro and had no problems at all. It looks great and my prints from DSCL look pretty much identical. I couldn't happier with mine!
 
I have 3x U2410's on my editing rig, all calibrated with Huey Pro. They all look fantastic, both prints from my Canon and the labs look spot on. Would not look back at all. I love mine.
 
Okay, guys, I bought the 2209WA and like it, but I'm having some calibration issues. The reason I upgraded was because I had muddy monos on my cheap TN screen. This is better, but my monos are still not black and white after calibration with spyder express2.

Its probably not accurate on the numbers (and quite frankly I am not sure what most of it means, or care to be frank) but what is important to me is that it looks right and the prints match. I wouldn't scare people off of a good monitor because of the numbers being innaccurate when (as an amateur) i can get great results using it.
 
Hmm i have U2410 and was going to buy spyder 3 or similar to calibrate it. Now I'm not sure if there is any point based on what dalex wrote... arrggh

I didn't say it is useless. You can use the colourimeter in non wide gamut modes. The sRGB and AdobeRGB will work fine. And AdobeRGB is a very good starting point than any other mode considering the current state of things. You can still use it in wide gamut mode if you calibrate the difference matrix and example of which is given here and in this post from the thread I referenced earlier. Though the only software that I know of that supports this is iColor Display.

As I said, fom me it works great. I have no need to go into this detail. the images on screen look natural and when prints come back from DSCL they are pretty much identical. That is all I require!

Of course! With regards the colour cast, it is always worth calibrating after the monitor has been on for a little while. I would then calibrate reguarly after that for a while as they take a little while to 'settle down'. Did you calibrate in even and not too strong a light? I have a blackout blind next to my monitor (on a window obviously! ;)) and I always make sure this is pulled down.

I calibrated in the same low light conditions I use for editing. I'll give it another go and see how it is.

As an aside I still can't get it to work DV-I - will VGa make a difference?

Jim, if you happy with it - that's all that matters :)

I'm on the other hand would not be satisfied with profile that has large deviation errors. Mainly because I like to get everything working nearly perfect ;) but also because even though the prints appear to match, I would not be sure that each time I edit photo in LR/PS and adjust colours (WB or otherwise to match my perception via that Dell monitor) that it won't come out looking wrong in the print or elsewhere. So far I only got close to perfect, calibrating and profiling the Standard mode (full monitor gamut) - calibrating was done via Service menu adjusting RGB values directly to match D65.
 
I bought a 2209WA from Ebay a few weeks ago and am very pleased with it. I considered the ones with minor faults but opted for the refurb which looks pristine. The only problem I have is that my PC doesn't recognise it as HDCP compliant so I can't play blu ray movies. I am doing a rebuild of my PC and upgrading to Win 7 so hopefully that will sort it out.
