Forgive me for asking what might be a really stupid question but I've always paid for seperate Camera insurance and I know most people say adding it Contents Insurance can be more Cost Effective but I'm looking at buying a Second Hand DSLR, is it possible to cover used goods on a contents policy?

I add my camera gear every year.....works out at about £35 But I have to give a list of the gear because I am so specific about it.

Its cheaper than the dedicated insurance and I know when I dropped my main body 2 years ago, claiming with Tesco, I had no issues at all and it was dealt with fast.

Nearly all my gear was bought 2nd hand (or maybe 3rd/4th/etc) but my home contents insurer has no problem with that. All they wanted was a list of items with serial numbers and a copy of the receipt - they even accepted PayPal printouts as proof of purchase and price.

All items are insured on a new for old basis.

HTH :)

Mind telling which company it is? I would be interested to know. :)

Bear in mind if using home contents insurance that the insurer may require the contents insured is entirely for amateur use, no paid work whatsoever.

I'm with Hiscox for my household insurance and when I took out the policy I specifically asked about cover for my photographic equipment. They re-inforced the "strictly amateur, no paid work" point on the telephone, but otherwise said it was covered and they did not need to know about the items unless they were individually worth over some ridiculous figure (£15,000 or so I think).

I've just recently renewed with debenhams home insurance via gocompare.com. Have had £5000 of photographic equipment compared with accidental cover for buildings and contents came to around £270

our contents covers anything as long as one individual item is no more that £2000 which i found pretty good.

Even though the receipt is (I assume) for less than the replacement price?

Indeed so :) I suppose they think being old(er) makes me less likely to try to diddle them .... well, they've been right up 'til now anyway :D
