Yes
A friend has some problems with her XP computer, trouble is they are miles away and I cant explain what needs to be done. How can I control her system from my vista computer?

Remote desktop?

www.logmein.com

I use this to repair my dads PC in Spain, it's free and works a treat!

Create an account, then get her to log in to YOUR account, using YOUR credentials...

Then get her to "Add Computer"..

Then you log in and use the credentials, she supplies to get into her PC - Job Done.

You can then adjust the quality of the "Graphics" VS "Speed" for lower bandwidth connections :-)

Remote Desktop / Support falls down unless youre on a LAN due to the ports you need open. Unless your friend has set up the whole Remote Desktop Web Connection configuruation (which is highly doubtful)

Logmein / GotomyPC (free demo) will give you control, but I don't think the person at the other end can see what you're doing with LogMeIn, they definitely can't with GoToMyPC (may be an issue)

GoToAssist would be perfect, but it's not free

http://www.showmypc.com/ is probably your best bet, for free.

JasonRS,

Yes, the person the other end can Watch & Learn whilst you work away and no need to worry about ports. It uses it's own encrypted connection as you connect. Once it's Set-Up and that ain't that difficult, it's very easy to use.

Blimey, if my 60yr Old Dad can set it up his end!!!! -- Anyone can.....

I don't know about GoToMyPC cos I've never bothered with it, since LogmeIn is free. the only thing you can't do (On the free version) is drag and drop data, which to be honest even if you could use, wouldn't be that beneficial since it's just the same as emailing really.

It's still doing it over the connection, so no real benefit (Speedwise). IMHO

If you have a spare PC/Laptop you can roadtest at home, dead easy. Up & running in 10mins

Another vote for www.logmein.com

It's free, it's brilliant, and the other person can see exactly what you're doing.

Yep, I was so pleased with it and well my Dad use to live round the corner to me. To be able to fix his PC nearly as well as I did when he lived here as I can now in Spain - I told them so on their feedback.

They then sent me some pens and a T-Shirt, Free - They were sent from Holland.

I hadn't given them anything, not many companies would do that these days.

Interesting, as you can't with GoToMyPC, the screen goes black when someone connects remotely. Which I prefer, as if I'm connecting to my own machine from a remote location, I don't want anyone watching the screen...

It's a brokered service, so no need to worry about ports etc, as is GoToAssist, GoToMeeting and GoView... ;)

GoToMyPC is very well known to me, and free for me too (and works on my Mac with the current beta) but then I do work for the parent company ;)
