Yes
I acquired an SB-28 as part of a kit and although it is in very good condition, the battery terminals were quite corroded (along with the Duracells inside).

I have cleaned off some of the gunge and confirmed that the unit is working. Not very quick at re-cycling but I'm not sure if that is down to my cheapo batteries or the contacts.

Is there any way to get them really clean?

I've got a fibre pen that cleans up contacts well.

Or how about some wire wool?

a Fibreglass pen is the best. keep going till all the metal shines or the corrosion will creep back.

As suggested, a fibreglass pencil - not, I would suggest, wire wool (loose steel fibres).
As regards the degree of 'scrubbing' the contacts yes, make sure you remove all the corrosion. However, be aware that too much scrubbing may remove the plating and expose the base metal, copper or more probably steel, which could in itself lead to poor contact with the batteries over time due to verdigris or rust forming.

Hi
I have used a cotton wool bud with white spirit. It kills the verdi grease. If you don't kill it, it will return.

On of the best things for this is deoxit

You can get it online for about £12-£15 and is good for this sort of thing.

Surgical Spirit on a bit of cotton wool is also quite good.

Kill then clean is my advice.. Bycarbonate of soda from the kitchen cupboard in a drop of water applied with a cotton bud will kill it dead. then clean it..

smear them in vasaline after cleaning

I can second the use of Bicarb it does really work.

How about that conductive grease used for car battery posts?

its not as conductive as you would think but there is no reason not to use it as the pressure will break through the grease when the doors shut..

Thanks for your replies.

I had tried surgical spirit on a cotton bud which worked to a degree.

Since tried baking soda but this didn't seem to improve what I've already done.

I found a small tube of Deoxit for £5.95, Andy and a fibreglass pen for £3.90 on evilbay (thanks Colin, Terry and Byker).

The terminals on the lid still look pretty grotty but having just inserted a set of fully charged eneloops, it fires up nicely.

I think it still might be worth trying either the Deoxit or the pen though.

Thanks for all your help.
