Hi there
I am new to this site so im sorry if this is in the wrong place!!

Basically i have just started to learn photography, I am trying to teach myself!! Would i need to have done a photography course and gained a qualification to have a job/career and earn from it.

I love photography and would love to earn a living from it.I enjoy it so much and i just keep practising at the moment to try and improve.

Any reply's gratefully received

Thanks Carrie :)

no, most photographers are freelancers. No formal qualifications needed.

Go out and shoot, take lots and lots of pictures! Then go from there...

What type of photography are you planning on getting into?
+1 to the other comment.
Generally no qualification for freelance or self employed work but companies may want qualifications for a staff job but normally just evidence of experience and other work so just get shooting and build up portfolio and get experience even doing unpaid work ie local newspaper, friends wedding not as the main photographer, portraits of friends and family, local sports etc

I'm wandering this at the moment. Just got an email through in the spam about the Photography Institute course. Don't remember signing up to it...

I'm thinking about a possible career in photography, but it does seem like that course would result in a diploma which might not be much use on a CV. As a useful resource it might be worth it for the learning though.

Although it's perfectly possible to be entirely self-taught, it can also be fun to sign up to an evening class or similar at a local college. Doesn't have to be a qualification course, but learning the basics with like-minded people is never a bad thing! Plus you'll hopefully get good feedback from course tutors over your work on a regular basis.

I've gone the OCA route because I could do it in my own timescale rather than committing to certain times per week, plus it's the only course I found with truly recognisable qualifications.

Portfolio is nice but when freelance it is all about the specific pictures, most agencies will not ask to see a portfolio, all they are interested in are photos that will make them (and you) money.

and that carefully selected set of commercially relevant images are... your portfolio.
