Hi, can someone explain why most of my recent photos are the CR2 files and not JPEG. I'm using a 450D one photo can be a JPEG and the following a CR2 (which i can't seem to use)

Sounds like you've set the camera to shoot in JPG+RAW, the raw file is the CR2.

You can use the RAW file with Canon DPP software which comes with the camera.

Personally now shoot only in RAW as a bit more flexible and more chance of saving those shots that nearly were

Can double check this as it will tell you what the camera is shooting in on the bottom left of the screen if it's the same as the 500D.

Its in the center on the bottom row showing the file setting RAW+L.

Can be opened with the canon software or photoshop

just to add , if you are of the photoshop artist then using raw will add to your photography

if you do get you exposure white balance wrong you can adjust this to suit,

also can add contrast add remove sautration and make the image have more clairty

its good practice specially as I found the images seldomly come off the camera thatclear off the 450D

Yep, the .CR2 file is a RAW file - as above, check your settings re quality

Worth noting that the above Codec's are not for Windows 7. Full lists of compatible Operating Systems are listed next to each manufacturer, XP and Vista mainly.

I have found this too (I actually thought I had back/front focus issues), and by default I have my sharpening set to 3. That's mostly ok for my images, sometimes I drop it to 2 if there's a lot of lines in the image (to stop jaggies) and might bump it to 4 for landscapes that need that extra bit of 'ooh yeah'.

Any unsharpened RAW will need a bit sharpened though due to the AA filter.
