Well it's happened. The Credit Crunch finally and not unexpectedly, crunched upon me and as of last Friday, I am now officially redundant. It's a disconcerting experience certainly, but I have no intention of sitting twiddling my thumbs. In between scouring the planet looking for proper work, I mean to set myself some photography projects, which in an odd way, am really looking forward to. These are:

1. Sensibly catalogue my photos in Lightroom. I'm afraid I've been a bit ad hoc about that.
2. Design myself a web site. I'm reasonably computer literate, but haven't a clue where to begin with that.
3. Sound out local togs who may be looking for a cut price assistant.
4. Get myself a catalogue of some decent architectural (it's what I am) photographs, possibly with a view to supplementing income with that (not easy though).
5. Advertise in the local rag as a budding wedding tog.

Phew. Now that I've written that down it seems quite a lot to do. I think I'll go and have a lie down.

Anybody think of anything else project wise to busy myself with?

Think local, and be there for anything of interest that's going on. Documenting your locality has value in itself, and gives something specific to fill your site with, which can attract interest more than a seemingly random portfolio. Try to educate your neighbours into not constantly expecting freebies e.g. sell disks, which will also save your hosting costs. You should soon be the person they think of first for photography. Don't "forget" to declare your earnings.

Best of luck!

Thanks for that - that's some pretty good advice, actually. I hadn't thought of it in local terms.

Sorry to hear about your job :(

Website design can either be done from scratch using notepad and a few good reference books and websites; in a WYSIWYG editor like Dreamweaver; or loads of companies do decent (and cheap) templates for Photography sites (http://www.clikpic.com/ springs to mind as a friend of mine used them).

Happened to me early July mate, a good thing in a silly way. I had a long hard think about how much I needed to earn and how much free time I would have earning just that. I now have more time, more fun and enjoy what I do,mostly......:).........It ain`t a dress rehearsal bud......

Thanks for that - I'll have a look. I bought the Dummies Guide to Web Design 3 or 4 years ago and never look at it. I'm going to dig it out and plough my way through it.

Yeah I know. It's the second time it's happened to me - though the last time was a good long time ago. You have the realisation that no matter how much you might think work matters - it doesn't.

Sorry to hear the news. I suffered the same fate back in August. I'm still looking for work although I've had a few photo commissions in the meantime. Tough times but there's always a light....

Best of luck in your search.

Absolutely. These things have can a strange kind of way of sorting themselves, don't they. Though it's never easy.

I was of ill for a couple on months earlier this year and I spent ages scanning old prints and negatives.

Sorry to hear about the job loss mate. I am in the same boat since week before last. Company belly up - no money to pay so no redundcancy etc.

But like you I am spending the spare time gettuing website up (job done) and looking for photog work and web design work to pay the bills (and have fun of course). There's a bit of folio building to do so I am needing to do a few freebies for the credit and referrals but I make sure they are interesIt's going to be a hard slog - but I don't want to go back to an office if I can help it :-)

I too got Redundant on Sat just gone and with a mortgage to pay am quite down to be honest as there be no Income and finding a new job is going to be hell... I am also currently Injured with a Shoulder Injury too.

What the world coming to?

That's a bummer. I was lucky in that respect - I got a package which should help through a few months. But now's the time to do some lateral thinking. Office work - working for others....:bang:

Sorry to hear about the job but keep your chin up kid ,life is too short , nobody knows whats around the corner .And do the things you've always wanted to do.Good luck. ;)

It's all around. People are dropping like flies in my line of work. Don't get yourself too despondent though, mate. It's never as bad as it seems. Last time it happened to me turned out to be life changing. Think positive would be my advice - and keep yourself busy.

yea me to last august had accident in work hurt my back ( i was there for 3 weeks ) called me into office and said bye bye your not suitable for this type of work ( lead refinery)

and the redundancy machine is still rolling across the country. has anyone been in contact with a place/company called REACT they supply funds for retraining up to £3000 i think

SO we could all retrain as photographers then? :-)

Now whilst I'm not pimping, if anyone looking at the possibility of earning some extra income quite legally wants to PM me, I have a couple of things that may or may not be of interest.

Hope it doesn't come to that with me - but if there's no jobs out there in my line of work....
