Cropping Images

I was wondering.....................is cropping an image cheating????

I took a shot today and whilst I am happy overall I would love to have been able to get closer to get exactly what I had in mind. With the lens I had at the time I didn't quite have enough reach and what I was shoot was not possible to get closer to.

What would the best way to be to crop an image to keep it in similar proportion to the original image (I know by cropping I would make it smaller but I guess I mean keeping the "shape" the same).

In photoshop you can pre-set the image dimensions when you crop so you can ensure you keep the same aspect ratio.

Almost every image benefits from being cropped. How can it be cheating? You do whatever it takes to an image to make it great. Depends what programme you are cropping in but set the aspect ratio to 3x2 and you'll keep the same proportions as the original. Nothing wrong with having images of other shapes though - square - long and narrow - whatever works for the picture.

Ok, I will look a bit later once I am back on my own laptop. I thought I would ask as in the past I have just cropped personal images to what I wanted with no consideration to to size etc......................
