Hi

Really quick question:

When shooting raw files, if you harshly crop it, do you get better results than if you crop the same area on a jpeg where it becomes soft ?

Thanks

Probably wouldn't make much difference, if you have a Large quality JPEG. But a Raw file might give you a little more scope for optimising noise reduction and sharpening on the final image.

If you crop hard though, image quality will be dramatically reduced whatever you do.

When you crop all you are doing is cutting pieces out of an image and this therefore has no effect what so ever on image quality

However, if you then increase the size of the piece you've cropped out the image quality could suffer depending upon the viewing distance or how closely you look

Modern cameras produce images that are big enough for many uses and even if you cut pieces out of the image it may still be big enough for a good sized print

So you just gotta watch how much you crop and how big an image you expect to end up with.

All things being equal RAW should give you more control and if you are pretty capable at post capture processing you should end up with a better image if you capture and process RAW

Taking a jpeg, which is already lossy compressed, editing and saving again will further reduce the image quality. If you're only doing it once from a high quality jpeg you probibly won't notice the difference, but cropping from the raw to give an oringinal jpeg the size you want would be better. This in addition to the other editing options mentioned above.
