Whats so special about cross type AF points?

I have been looking at the differences between the 60D and the 7D and trying to figure out if the difference of 300 quid is worth it. Aside from the AF points there isn't really a deal in it with the exception of the second processor on the 7D. I don't really shoot sport, and I hardly ever use burst.

Are there other differences worth the extra 300 quid?
 
If you use prime lenses wide open it's almost essential.

So far the plus points of the 7D over the 60D are:

Better autofocus
Dual Processor
Higher FPS (I don't know if this is much of a bonus for me).
 
Better build quality
Better weather sealing
Bigger viewfinder

Also, be aware that it's not just a case of more AF points, the entire AF system is vastly improved over the xxD line, although I grant that, if you're not shooting sports or other moving targets regularly then this may not be a big issue.

TBH there will be very few times if ever that i would be shooting moving sports. I'm very much a walk round casually snapping away type of tog (people and places), there may be opportunities wher i may need to take some snaps at a party or something. I quite fancy having a bash at macro and thats where I thought the flip screen of the 60D may come in handy. I cant see how the bigger viewfinder would be a deal breaker though. Weather sealing is nice, but Im using a 17-55 which isnt weather sealed.

I just noticed your kit list, pretty much the same as mine wtih the exception of the 10-22 and my F4 is not IS. How do you find the 17-55 on the 7D?

The 17-55 is generally regarded as one of the best, if not *the* best walkabout lens on a crop-sensor camera.

I find it a superb lens - the only things it really lacks compared to the 'L' alternatives such as the 24-70 or 24-105 are weather sealing and build quality, although the build of the 17-55 certainly isn't lacking.

The 18mp sensors in both the 60D and 7D need good glass as they'll show up the weaknesses of lesser lenses. The 17-55 is certainly up to the job.
 
Just to clarify:

  • The 60D has 9 cross sensors with a double cross on the centre.
  • The 7D has 19 cross sensors with a double cross on the centre.
But the 7D also has a whole load of advanced focus related settings that are supposed to really help with moving targets and so on. Birders and sports shooters love it.
