crucial mac memory, 2 x 2gb or 1 x 4gb?

Hi

new imac is on its way with 4gb of memory as standard (2x2gb), and want to get a further 4gb from crucial. They do it in either 2 x 2gb sticks or one 4gb stick.

Which is better to get or will it not make any difference?

Don't have a mac, but for best performance you should always use dual banks of RAM, so 2x2G should be better.

+1 on above.

I'm not sure how much the 2x2Gb sticks are at the moment but have a look at 2x4Gb ones as well as they were a really great price a couple of weeks ago (around £75).

As you will be filling all your available slots at the moment if you then wish to upgrade further in the future you will have to remove and replace existing memory.

Just got a new iMac myself this week with 4GB and looked into the very same thing. I was told you don't need pairs these days and so went for the single 4GB card from Crucial for about £35 inc postage. This still leaves a spare slot for later. Made a big difference in speed. Bit cheaper than Apple's upgrade quote of £150! Absolute doddle to fit in about two minutes.

I always fill with the single biggest module, leaving other slots for free for future upgrades..

I'm not sure how noticeable the difference will be, therefore would take advice from others who know better :lol:

went for 2x 4gb sticks in the end as it was only £70 from crucial (2x 2gb was about £35), and thought may as well go for it now rather than later! it should fly with 12gb of ram i'd imagine!
 
I would never run a machine with one stick, but from what you have said I assume yours takes 3? Always pair up in the best combo you can afford. 8GB should be really good :)
 
my imac has 4 x 2GB .. i was told its not able to run 4 x 4GB as it wouldnt work :(
