Custom White Ballance

Like all things you don't know the answer to this seems like a dumb question but, here goes.

I want to set a custom white balance for indoor shooting at an awards lunch. I understand the process of selecting the white ballance but I'll be using flash on the day. When I'm pointing my camera at the grey card to set it, do I do so with the flash on or off?

It makes no difference, the grey card must be illuminated by the light you want to balance it for but if using on camera just set to flash.

On camera probably. I could set a Speedlight up on a light stand but with people walking about collecting awards it probably wouldn't be wise.

Agree with setting white balance to flash assuming every shot taken uses it.
Although if shooting raw files the odd one without flash won't matter.
The only thing I would try would be a side bracket to get the Speedlight off of the parallel with the lens to help reduce red eye.
Even with pre-flash you can sometimes get red-eye. And if shooting loads doing post production red eye might be a chore.
