My Town (Otley) hosts an annual evening street race and popped along to snap some of the action

I can make two observations, Chris:

— this guy hoped you'll make him famous (#1)
— your flash sync is too low! (#1 & #2)

Chris, a few points:
  • there are two "pictures" in your pictures!!!
look at the right helmet in #2 as it is more obvious
  • your flash was triggered on the first curtain and the
SS was longer than necessary and so is responsible
for the second "ghost" image… the remaining time
    until the second curtain shuts.
Your SS was set according to your aperture to get a proper
daylight exposition. You used your flash in TTL ( good idea!)
but you left the SS as it was: too slow.

The solution was to set your SS at flash sync speed of 1/250s if
you are on Nikon. If not, look up the flash sync speed on you body.

Kodiak my sync speed is 1/200 with Canon and this image was shot at 1/180 -adding to that my bugbear is frozen wheels, and like to add some feeling of motion in my images... i could of gone the high speed sync route but that would kill my 430ex getting one shot at a time whereas i was shooting in two shot bursts at the riders which works for me without killing my flash gun but i take on board what your saying

adding to that my bugbear is frozen wheels,

…but the wheels are not frozen!
and like to add some feeling of motion in my images
Well, of course, this is your privilege decision…

I cannot talk about your gear as I am totally ignorant
about anything not Nikon.

Your TTL worked great BTW!
