cyclists

Would anybody be interested in a bike tour next easter, london to italy?

I am doing it in aid of cancer research.

Very.

But, how long would it take? I'm thinking I won't be able to have the time off as I'm meant to be saving up my holiday for a honeymoon next year (mine, of course)

also, I've got to say, the cycling bug has completely replaced the photography bug I had. I'm even thinking of selling up my kit just to fund more cycling gadgets!

Which is annoying, as I spent A LOT of money on my camera (well, a lot for me)

Simon, I think it would be possible in 3 weeks, although I am aiming for 4 weeks in order to have a couple of rest days.

I am assuming that this would not be possible for you?

No worries guys.

I will have a set of panniers n the back and a ruck sack.

Would be better with 2 people, and I am even looking into a support vehicle.

Not seen any mention of touring bikes on here, which is what i used to ride, looks like a racing bike to Mr average, but it's heavier with slightly wider tyres, i always wore Lycra back in the day 12.5st so didn't look to bad, at 14.5st now i would give it a wide berth  but without a doubt was the most comfortable thing to wear, i used to ride the 10 miles to work everyday and get changed when i got there i did get the odd funny look when i walked into the locker room when i first started there, but the guys soon got used to me  i was quite lucky in those days as i had a friend who worked in the Dawes factory in Birmingham, he got some unbelievable shop soiled deals i'm talking less than a 3rd of the retail price in most cases, then when i moved to Milton Keynes my brother owned a cycle shop, so again great deals :D it's funny how things change though, i mean i make a lot of excuses about why i'm not so keen now, the main one being time, but in reality i don't have any less time now than i had then, maybe it's old age :)

Hardest part of a bike ride is the 10 yards from the doorstep to the road *

unless you're riding the Marmotte/Etape etc

#80 (y)

Very versatile bike that can be used for commuting; shopping; day rides; breaking in the braking surfaces of hard-anodised racing rims; not-so-serious time trials; cyclo-cross and old style rough stuff; and eventually be relegated to duties as a winter hack.

Even so, years ago the (still UK-based) manufacturers were calling anything that could have mudguards shoehorned in despite tight clearances a "tourer", some of them more honestly calling them Audax bikes.

The heavy tourer (i.e. a bike designed for touring with heavy loads) is a more specialised beast. Outward signs might include braze-ons for front and rear carriers; extra bottle cages; and a seat stay pump peg. The outer and middle chainrings may look small and close in size, indicating "half-step and granny" gearing.

I've just ordered two pairs of clipless shoes (Northwave Vertigo Pro, and the ones with the SBS rachet strap), to see which ones I prefer (more the colour than anything else- I'm a bit particular like that). Anyway, I'm a size 10, and ordered 11s as I've read they come up a bit small.

If any of you lot are a size 10 and are in the market for a pair of clipless shoes, I'll have a spare pair that'll save me the hassle of sending them back to the shop etc. I've paid £80 for the Vertigo Pro, and £90 for the SBS system. Unused of course. Just going to look at the colours next to my white bike and red Keo pedals. I'll put them in the classifieds when they arrive if needed

I know, it was a bit of a mix up really. I ordered one pair, and there was a bit of a mix up, so ordered a slightly different pair from another site, but then the first pair went through too, so I'm going to see which ones I prefer colour wise etc.

Basically, I have a white bike, and have bought some red clipless pedals on here in the classifieds, so I wanted some shoes with a bit of white and red in, so was getting quite particular.

Whichever I go for, I'm going to have a pair I need to return (which is always a pain in the arse), so they'll be up for grabs at the price I paid for them

Never could get on with the white "Disco Slipper" jobs - I'll stick with my black Sidi Genius's - best part of 5 years old and just starting to look worn in.

I'd like a tourer as I'm gonna be riding to the shop and stuff a lot and they look pretty cool, its kinda on my long term list but its below some fair investment in computing kit.

I got told its illegal to ride with headphones in - is this BS as I like riding with tunes a lot?

Not illegal as far as I know, but it IS silly and pretty dangerous!

I can't hear a darn thing over wind noise which is why I like the music

is there a way around that?

Stop eating Brussels Sprouts :D

harsh guys - tbh I aint going that fast but it goes quiet when I turn my head to look around to see whether that is a car I can hear and there aint :s

thinking its helmet related mebe - not sure

got both pairs of shoes.

Northwave Vertigo Pro are the slightly cheaper pair at £80, and the colours are perfect (for my mostly white bike, and red pedals)

Mine are the white, red and black ones

Northwave Vertigo Pro SBS are the slightly more expensive pair at £90, and the colours aren't as perfect, but it's meant to be a better shoe due to the SBS rachet strap thing replacing one of the velcro straps

Think I'll end up going for the slightly cheaper pair, as I prefer how they look. And that means I can return the SBS pair to Geoffrey Butler, rather than send the cheaper ones back to Wiggle

mebe its helmet related :s all I can really hear is a rumbly roary car enginey sound, so I turn to look and the noise stops. maybe its the straps by my ears oscillating? will have a fiddle later

Strap-induced turbulence near your lug-holes?

Strap-induced turbulence near your lug-holes?

Either that or your mate is called Noddy ??

Can't help on the helmet strap side of things - only wear a helmet for the mountain bike (where I'm going so slow there's no wind noise anyway) or when I used to do time-trials (where All I could hear was the thump-thump-thump of my pulse hitting 185+ for a hour at a time :puke:)

I know I'm gonna fall off / get knocked off at some point, and a helmet saved whats left of my intellects riding so I think its worth it for cycling
