If you buy a new camera or lens at the same time it makes the carriage cost seem less of a problem ;)

It's much worse when it's blown up, i'll get it cleaned and see what they say about it

Well, the bad news is there is a scratch, Calumet were extremely helpful but they couldn't get it off :(

The seller is being helpful so i've just got to find out how much it costs to get the low pass filter replaced and contact him.

I could get my money back through paypal but the camera is mint so i'll see where this goes before going down that road.

I would stick with a pro clean as it will cost around £40 however if you mess up the filter above the sensor you will be looking at over £100.
 
Sadly he probably already is looking at a new filter, but still if the camera is otherwise minty it could be worth it.

I generally use an Arctic Butterfly on my 450D and have only needed to resort to a wet clean once in the last 2 years, again using Eclipse. Not as scary as you might think in the end, but I'll freely admit to having the jitters as I was doing it!

That is going to be a pricey repair.. I reckon you are looking at £400+... depends if they'd replace the AA filter or the whole sensor....
 
The seller is pretty helpful so i'm hoping he'll pay at least 50% towards it, i'll still be happy at that, it'd be a shame to send it back as it's mint apart from the important bit, the sensor clean means i'm just cloning the scratch out now but it'd be a PITA to do it on every pic I ever took so it'll want fixing.

I'll see how it goes

Thats to convert the camera to take inferred pics. Not something you want to do. as its not right for motorsprts, but could be intresting

I've had a reply from Calumet.

None of their repairers will go near it because it has to be re calibrated and they don't have the equipment so it has to go back to Nikon.

They need to see it because the filter is bonded to the sensor, if they can get it off and replace it the price will be circa £250 + vat, if they can't it'll be a new sensor at £1400 + vat :eek:

i'm not prepared to risk them taking it apart then saying it needs a £1400 repair so i've asked for a refund.

anyone selling a D3 :D
 
Ovey, I'm very sorry to hear that! I think everyone here feels your pain.

I would probably send it to Nikon anyway. If those IR converters can get the filter off, why shouldn't Nikon?
 
do they do an IR conversion for a D3, the problem is i'm not sure what they mean by Nikon want to have a look at it.

From what the guy at Calumet said they'll try to take the bonded filter off but if they can't it'll mean a new sensor.

I suppose I could talk to them direct, I don't mind them having a look at it but as it is now I can get my money back, if they take it apart and knacker it the seller isn't going to pay £1400+ vat for them to fix it

Was the seller aware of the issue before hand? I'd be surprised if they were not as it seems very obvious in the image.

Hope you get your cash back and find a further D3 for sale.

He says not but he hasn't used it in a while, it's a real pity because it's mint and i'm really impressed with everything about it.
 
You are lucky to have a coopertive seller Darren, this just shows the dangers of secondhand if you are dealing with unknown people. Bloke could have been really difficult about it. I hope you get your cash back ok.

Looks like i'm still going to be £60 out of pocket though £35 for the sensor clean + £25 return postage as I can't see him paying that as well

Can't you claim further costs from Paypal if you put a claim in? Maybe ask him to split the costs?
 
Get in touch with Nikon direct. I've occasionally found them to be cheaper than high street repairers. (CF slot replaced for £98 at Nikon, whereas cheapest quote on the high street was £125 - and NPS meant I was without it for only 3 days).
Incidentally, the CF slot was on the second shooters D300, not the D3

It's going back, I've decided I don't want to get involved with sensor repairs so i'll probably end up buying a new one

There should be some deals going about for the D3 now, one keeps popping up in the Google Ads at the top of the page :suspect:

On the brighter side Clifton Cameras are advertising them for £2569 on the advert on this page. An omen perhaps?

Pulled the trigger, it'll be coming tuesday, brand spanking new, no scratched sensors on this one :)

New D3 delivered today, took a picture, checked the shutter count in Opanda, 1 ,that'll do :D
