Hi,
New to Forums so be gentle!

I currently have a D80 and considering either second hand (but less than 15000 actuations and still warrentied) D3 or going for a new D700 (now with free grip!). Which would you advise?

I could do with 2 momory card slots as I am about to help at weddings too, which the D700 doesnt have but I would have longer warrenty, although never needed to sort out the D80.

HELP!!!!

d700, i've got a d3 and find it's muchos large and kinda wish i'd gone for a d700 so it's possibly being sold however like you've said theres pro's and cons for both but generally the size of the d700 swings it for me at the moment

that said if i can scrape together the funds having both would be nice :P

You need to go and try them out somewhere - see how they feel in your hands! I've got the D3 (x2) and never regretted it. Fantastic camera.

I have both, I prefer the feel of the D3 and its more comfortable to use for long periods (ie weddings!) than the D700 was, even with grip. One more important difference is the battery life and battery cost. One of the D3 batteries will last me all day but you would still need to carry a spare and they are £100 each...

D3 - slightly faster continuous shooting, more solid construction, extra battery

D700 - built in flash, very useful for remote triggering or fill flash, can be used without the grip, guarantee, new not second hand

I'd go D700, I usually leave the grip on but I often go out in the evning without grip and the 50mm 1.4 and it's a bit easier to carry around.

I'd go for the D3, but that's just me - I've used pro-Nikons for 20+ years now and they just 'feel' right to me...plus I batter the poo out of my workhorses...

If I were going to buy a new work/hobby-camera that was going to be subjected to 'light' use - then the D700 would be a clear winner - especially with the free grip now on offer...

the SH D3 is likely to hold its value a little better than D700 I would think too, especially if the rumour mill is correct about a D700s being in the pipeline....

If you are used to a D80, a D3 is going to seem like a honking great brick (which it is)

I think a D700 would suit - handle both, but unless you've got hands like a bunch of bananas, you'll probably find a D700 much nicer. However if you intend to inflict a grip on the D700 (the worst thing you can do it it, apart from dropping it down the loo) then it becomes even more brick-like than the D3..

Handle both mind you.

Go for new. The D700 is a stonking bit of kit. Don't forget the cost of glass !

Unless you need the extra robustness of the D3, I would go for the D700 (and flog the grip).

Totally depends what you're doing with it, I went for the D3 as it ends up rolling round my car, resting on rocky ground etc and generally feels unloved so the extra protection the D3 pro body gives it is great for me
