D300 cushioning foam?

Not really sure what it's called :thinking:, but there is a small (and delicate :bonk:) line of sponge where the mirror flips up to act as cushioning. I recently cleaned some dust from inside and just prior to refitting the lens noticed a hair on/in the sponge.....got hold of it and tore the sponge in the process, with the hair came about a third of this material, blimey it's wafer thin stuff!

Anything to worry about long term? the camera is functioning fine but I guess it's something Nikon could sort if it may cause issues later on....I can't see that it will hurt but would like to know from anyone who thinks otherwise :thumbs:
 
Well the mirror will now be less cushioned when it flips up, I'd get it sorted, it won't be an expensive repair but a mirror/mirror mechanism which has failed because it's not been properly cushioned would be and wouldn't be covered by your warranty.

Being a D300 it's well out of warranty but long term i'm worried about the mirror not being supported all the way across when it flips up if that makes sense? It was such a dumb thing to do :cuckoo:, it was as if the hair was stuck in the foam and it tore on pulling it away....I might send an e mail to Nikon and see what they think.
 
You can probably pick up some foam on ebay and do it yourself. When I replaced the seals on my Mamiya the kit included a mirror damper and it was an absolute breaze to do.

i bought my seals from the 'Man' = Jon Goodman in the States

superb detailed kits from my Nikon EM to a Canon Ae-1

Is that the Interslice guy?

Think that was the name of the kit I got for my 645.
 
I would advise that you contact Nikon UK spares department, you may be surprised at how cheap the part is.

I scratched a focus screen, on-line prices varied between £5 - £10, rang Nikon spares, they were 89p each.

If the part is the one I think it is, at the top, it is held in by two cross headed screws, and a simple DIY task.

Can't see any obvious signs of any screws? the foam looks like it is glued in place possibly :shrug:

That is exactly what i'm after......would be nice if it was available from Nikon, they have e mailed me to say that they won't comment on whether it may have an adverse effect over time if left as is and suggested I send the camera in, after looking at this it looks an easy fix and i'm not too keen to send the camera through the post so may well go this route :thumbs:

On my D300 there are two cross headed screws holding a piece of metal, this is the part with the foam on.

They are visible from the front of the camera, just below the lens mount ring at the top.

Just found an image online, the screws are located behind the 'N' (of Bend) & 'T' (of Latch) - The camera is upside down in this image :thumbs:

Martyn,

You are right, there are two little screws as per your pic....they are tiny! I have e mailed Nikon and the guy at interslice so we will see what occurs. To be honest, on inspection, I wouldn't of thought these screws were anything to do with the foam damper so thank you for pointing this out :thumbs: If available it will be an easier and less hairy fix than cutting and re-applying......

I am fairly sure that the foam is fitted to this metal part, it was several years ago that I replaced the focus screen, but I am sure I removed it in order to do so, and it was all one piece.

Appreciated.........will let you know how I get on, i've found a micro screwdriver that fits the screw heads nice and snug so i'm ready to go if I can source the part :thumbs:

Just thought i'd post a 'thank you' to all involved.......long story short Nikon are sending me a replacement damper foam FOC which will need fixing to the plate which seems like an easy enough fix, (they were very easy to deal with btw).

Also Jon from Interslice was incredibly helpful in between talking to Nikon too :thumbs:
