Just out of intrest what picture setting do you use on your D300's

I basically always shoot RAW with Netural, but could be intresting to try out other people's custom user settings.

If you shoot raw (not RAW :nono:) it doesn't matter if you select any other in-camera settings, like saturation, unless you are processing the images in Capture NX as the likes of Lightroom doesn't recognise them afaik

Thats correct, the setting is saved as a tag for capture NX to read, but if you use lightroom / camera raw / photoshop, there is no difference whatsoever.

The reason i set it to netural is that it's easier to process using CS4, ie saturation, usm ect, I also have NX 2 but rarely use it i find it to slow, even *** my PC is fast.

the point is whatever you select, it will not have any effect on the appearance in CS4

I had Uncle Ken's custom settings programmed into my D300 (boy does he like things saturated ) and when you opened the the raw files in Lightroom the embedded jpeg would appear with all the settings in place and then the image would suddenly change to the raw state, (obviously as the raw file loaded).

Took me a wee while to figure out what was going on

Even if you use any of them from standard to neutral to vivid, the sub menus still can be different according to personal choice. You say you use neutral but not mentioned the sub settings like saturation or hue for example.

I presume when you say custom settings are you referring to the custom setting bank and not the settings in the sub menus, you don't say which.

Maybe if you could be a little more explicit it would be helpful

Basically i set everything to zero it my custom settings, I perfer it that way.

:agree:

First job with any new camera is to turn everything OFF for the most 'natural' capture IMO

That doesn't seem to be sensible advice at all.

If you shoot raw, then the settings don't matter a jot, neutral or not.

If you shoot JPEG, you are going to want to shoot with more optimal settings.

Even if you shoot jpeg - I still prefer to add my 'flavourings' later rather than in camera

Yours unsensibly

Well in that case, you need to neutralise white balance and make your own curve, as the Neutral has a mid-tone hump.

For a truely neutral file, you'd be looking at D70 era output (very flat, no mid-tone boost)

(D2X Mode One picture control gets close-ish)

This is why plenty of folks shoot with UniWB (which is far too extreme and hard core for me), but don't underestimate the effect white balance has on what you might think is a "neutral" file.

Sorry a bit OT now :)

Regarding the question, as I mainly shoot nature type stuff, I'm looking at the Picture Control utility, hoping to make my output a bit more Fuji S5 Pro like colour wise.

I don't really think any of the picture controls are optimal - the D2X controls are quite good, maybe see what you think compared to Neutral?

Although again if you shoot raw, this doesn't matter (unless you use ViewNX or Capture NX) which will honour the in-camera controls.

If you use Lightroom for your NEF or other converters, then it doesn't matter what you choose.
