Hey hey

would a d300 with good glass be ok in lowlight situations or is a d700 the way to go?

The D700 would definitely be the better of the two, but i guess it depends on your budget, if that's no problem, then go for the D700 :)

This might help you out.

ISO2000 shot with a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8

How dark is the church interior?
This was with a D300 and Sigma 10-20. 1.25 at F4 iso 400 camera resting on a table. Obviously, a tripod or f2.8 and a higher iso would help in a darker church but the D300 is perfectly capable.

I took a range of interior mosque shots in Istanbul using both D700 and D300 and the D700 was the better option. Whether it was £700 better is a moot point. But if money no object go for the D700 and a fast, sharp lens or two.

Cheers guys. Think I have made my mind up. Money is quite tight and as the d300 is up to the job then that's the choice made.

Just bear in mind that the D700 will take shots at iso 6400 handheld which are more than acceptable quality (see here) whereas the same shot with the D300 will be noise filled and unacceptable quality. The D300 is more than up to the job so long as you remember to take a tripod.

I agree. Shot with the D700, low-light situation, the flexibility to move where you want and not have to worry about a slow shutter speed is ace! Taken from last wedding I did:

On DXOMark, these are the low-light scores on a scale of 0 to 2527:

D700 Low light ISO: 2303
D300 Low light ISO: 679

I'd like to add the D300 is a smart camera and is looking like my next buy as a back-up body.....unless I can really justify a D3 and displace a D700 as a back-up body............hmmmm.......

I think both bodies would be upto the job, what would be more important to me would be the glass on the front ..... I recently did a mock wedding shoot in a small church and found that the limiting factor for me was my 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6. You imply that you are not necessarily doing weddings but just church interiors. In this case, church permitting a tripod is your best friend and bracketing.

Hope this helps

According to DXO the D90 outperforms the D300......thats another (cheaper) option while you save for a d700!!

i should of been more forthcoming but i didnt want to stir up the wedding nest again.

yes, it will be for weddings.

i have held both cameras but have not been able to try them in lowlight situations. i will also be getting 2.8 glass.

it does seem the d700 is far far better in low light. its just the initial startup cost.
