Yes
I've been looking for a cheap d40 body and notice something a bit odd?
there seems to be not many even on the #bay. A second hand body goes for £160 when you can get a new one with lens for £220?
Is this because people just don't sell on their "starter kit" but keep it as a spare camera... I would have thought the 2nd hand places would be mostly full of entry level kit from canon, nikon etc by people "upgrading" but instead they are much better stocked in top end stuff...
Am i being dumb:cuckoo: or am I missing something:suspect:

Hi Alex,

I've got a D40 myself and will be upgrading in the new year. I'm very much considering keeping mine as a spare camera, it's done me proud in the time I've had it. I'm also hoping that my dad might get the photography bug when he retires (there are early signs he will!), so I can pass it on to him and he can enjoy it as much as I have.

Mine's on ebay at the moment with an extra 55-200mm lens and it's doing well (£275 at the moment) so i'm quite happy with that.

The problem is (as you say) you can get the kits new for just over £200 if you go to the right place, so a bare body isn't going to worth much more than £160.

For that kind of money most would rather keep it as a backup camera (something i did consider and would have done if my reserve price wasn't met)

Personally if you want something cheap i'd go for a D70 / D70s......

For the £160 or so you'd get, they are just not worth selling really, so folks probably keep them for a rainy day.

Its worth pointing out that a £60 saving is quite significant to some people, which is why they do go for £160 vs £220.

I agree and put myself in that group. I see it as £60 toward a lens.. just suprised the market isn't flooded with them...The other posters seem to have hit the nail on the head, better to keep it as a spare...

They're still relatively new and bloomin' good cameras so not many will hit the second hand market yet.
If the second hand market is still pricey might as well go for a new one? Monies permitting of course.

Or you could always write to Santa of course. :naughty:

sell fell through, so mine is back up.
think i'll stick it on ebay, when i get access back, as they have protected my ebay account due to possible third party access apparently

Jessops advertising the D40 with an 18-55 kit lens for just £230 today.

It amazes me, the D40 gets knocked regularly, claimed to have been out grown etc. And yet no one, as this thread indicated is parting with them cheaply, if at all? I have a D80, a Canon S50 compact, but came across an 'as new D40X body' the other week in a local camera shop, £150 with 12 months Gt. There was an issue?? . . . the shop sent it back to Nikon, back fully cheched out and working in a week, Nikon have realy got their service act together.

The D40s are light, can be used as a full fuction 'basic' DSLR back up or used as a sophisticated point and shoot, as will my partner. I like the idea of the full fuction P&S no thought snap shooting sometimes as well.

The focus issue is a 'red hearing', Canon have used the in lens motor focusing for years. Nikon obviously see this as a good rout to take with the 40s. Lenses are avaliable at the price point where the D40 is aimed. When and if the owner out grows the D40 all lenses will work on the upgrade bodies, but in the meantime, all you need to enjoy your first steps into DSLR photography is the kit lens and a Nikon 70-300? (expensive) or a Sigma 70-300APO with focus motor, superb value at less than £150.

This is how I have set up my D40X so that Hazel can use a light DSLR/kit lens, P&S style. I have the option of using whichever D40X or D80, the 40X is lighter and is in a small kit bag which fits very snugly between the seats of my car . . . 'quick draw facility'! in this instance I take it equiped with a Nikon 18-200VR lens, bang goes lightness!

Just another point of view, CJS

i owned a D40 for a year and ive got to say i never had any issues with it, placed it on ebay on it went in 20mins for my asking price. its a cracking little camera and would be a great second camera. own a D80 now and would say i love it

Got what i think is a good price for mine on ebay £275 for kit lens and 55-200 lens.

I've never said it was a bad camera, it takes great pics straight out of the box in Auto mode, i just found once i got used to i started to get frustrated with some of the settings being in the menu system (which in fact is easy to use just frustrating compared to my 'new' D200) and having to check and double check if i wanted to buy another lens to make sure it focused!

If it hadn't reached my reserve price i would have sold the lenses seperatley and kept the body as a backup as it's a good little camera, as it happens my reserve was met and off it went!

In hindsight i wish i'd have saved a bit more and gone for the D80 or D200 in the first place ;)
