If you've got a D4s then you should be budgeting for the 500mm 2.8 with 1.7 convertor [emoji1]

To get frame filled shots of birds with full frame cameras you've got to go long lenses to get the quality! Crop sensors not so much as you get more reach with the same length lens
....what type of photographer is buying the D4S and if so what's the main reason other than buffer speed?"
Presumably pro's who need the burst rate mainly, but also maybe because of low light capabilities/less noise?
The gap certainly has narrowed & presumably the likes of any new D8xx's etc will continue to improve, but there will still need to be `better` features/improvements kept for the D4 or successors to keep the pro's happy & sales figures ££££'s rolling in.
The way it's going I can see a much smaller range of SLR's which will cover the pro/serious amateur. It must be more cost effective in the long run?
It won't be too many years before manufacture of the SLR won't happen at all.
The d4 is only 24 mp full frame! So higher frame rate! The 810 is for quality 36mp but not high frame rate! Different sorts of photography!

just been reading an article Carl which clearly states that the high ISO images from the D750 are better than those from the D4S
I agree on the burst rate buffer ......... maybe sports shooters and BIF shooters ....... but that's seems to be the only advantage to me unless you want the built in grip ........ but the D750 is fast enough for me
The sensors - D7200 ......... D750 ............ and D810 also compete very well, (if not better), with the D4S . and I think that the D750 is catching up in the noise stakes even with a high pixel density
I have always fancied a D4 etc., but at £5k versus £1500 to £2k for the D750/810 ........ just wonder where the D4 range is going
If the high ISO of the D750 ARE actually better than the D4, then I guess it's mainly just sport/BIF 'togs then.
I bought a D4 a few months ago (always had GAS for one) & tbh it felt fantastic!
the images were great etc..... but it aint light (I'm not fussed for grips anyroad) & because I don't have a long prime, I found using my D800E gave me more reach/cropability/flexibility, so sold it.
Money wise, I reckon the D810 would suit 90% of folk.

Actually D4 is only 16MP, and no, you don't necessarily need 5/600mm to get frame-filled diving Kingfisher shot. In my workshop set-up we use 200mm. But the question was relating to the bodies, not lenses...The d4 is only 24 mp full frame! So higher frame rate! The 810 is for quality 36mp but not high frame rate! Different sorts of photography!
The D4S was only ever going to have a limited market, people make a living from their photography using far less "capable" kit, so I think they may well have hit the nail on the head with the D750. Offering that kind of performance, at that price point, in a compact body.. Gets not just people upgrading to FX for the first time in the Nikon camp, but several people shooting other systems who would have to replace APS-C optimised lenses anyway.
Canon have just celebrated 12 consecutive years as the market leader in interchangeable lens camera. That's the sort of lead that helps re-enforces itself. IMO they've spent a lot on marketing but wisely, have had the right models to tempt 'soccer moms', and a lens line-up that impresses. That latter being the reason why, despite all the 'woe betide Canon's sensors', there's been no wholesale fleeing to Nikon.
