D50 The AF-Assist Illuminator

Hi all

Just recently whenever I try and take photos in poor light the camera will not focus. I think I have narrowed it down to AF Assist

AF Assist is set to on but the bulb on the front of the camera never comes on. I think it is broken or I have done something really stupid in the menu.

Thoughts appreciated.

Is the D50 set to AF-A or AF-C focus mode?

Try setting it to AF-S in the menu. The light should come on.

The light now works sometimes but not on all settings.

Only works on auto and night settings, feel a right idiot at the moment as I have used the camera for the last couple of years with no problems.

Have I messed up another setting somewhere?

The light will only come on when the camera thinks it needs it, it won't always come on, even in low light, depending on various settings (focal length, subject brightness etc)

I don't think your D50 is broken, AF assist is only likely to come on in certain modes (probably not in "sports mode" etc as it would probably annoy althletes!)
