D500

Looks like there is a problem with using at least some 3rd-party batteries in the D500 ... EN-EL15 clones that have worked fine in e.g. D810 don't work in the D500. Will be annoying if you have built up a supply of 3rd-party batteries that won't work!.

I'm not sure how to put a figure on it, but yes better. My slightly might be less or more than someone else's :) I'd have been happy if it was them same as the D7200, It's the AF and FPS I'm looking forward to.
After all of the hype about ISO and the 'debatable' images posted from the test D500 on Flickr, I hoped for better than "slightly" :)

Well here's crops from those files. D500 is marginally better, BUT I wonder if this will be the case after downsampling the D7200 files? They weren't taken in super low light imo, f2.8 and 1/500 at ISO 12800.

I'd say less than a stop tbh, 1/3 tops when looking at the files on my computer. What's interesting is how much sharper the D500 files are, I'm guessing it doesn't have an aa filter but the D7200 does?

D7200 doesn't have a AA filter :)

Well the D500 images are sharper, so if neither have a filter it would suggest that the D500 has been focussed better as it appears that the same lens was used (at least the same type of lens). Not sure how/if this would influence noise?

Could be all sorts of reasons for a variation in sharpness but at at the price difference everything should be better! :)

Yep, plenty of scope of variation. I'm just not sure how the sensor effect sharpness other than resolution (where the D7200 should be better) and aa filter. I guess the microlenses and colour filters could affect it?

I've got to say I'm slightly underwhelmed by the ISO performance, BUT the D7200 is already a very good ISO performer so I guess we can't expect miracles ;)

Noise wasn't a problem with the D7100 in my opinion, but as I own a K-3 and D7100, the D500 has to be that camera that can latch onto a fast moving object and keep clicking for a while. I get used to the K-3's limitation which is, compared to the D7100, the AF; but the moment it catches the subject it can keep going on and on and on.. Fast AF is no good if you can only manage 5 shots in 2/3 second only to wait 8-10 seconds for the buffer to clear....

It's just the ISO has been hyped up for a while now so folk were expecting big things.

I think the AF system and buffer will be its best feature TBH, although again exactly how much of a step forward it'll be time will tell. FPS and buffer is clearly quite a step up, I wonder if accuracy will be an better.

On those files there may not be much difference but on the one I linked to yesterday the d500 looks much better than the d7200, I've been very impressed from what I've seen (this is not my image btw)

As long as the user is happy then that's all that matters. If I actually look at the size and texture of the grain I can't see a great deal of difference tbh (yes the D500 is marginally better). I think the WB of the d7200 accentuates the noise as there's more of a luminance difference. I certainly think the D500 is closer to the D7200 than the D750, and then there's the downsizing too.

Strange, most on dpr (and myself) think it's closer to the d750 but everybody sees things differently.

Strange, I've only just read three posts but they all appear to agree with me lol.

Maybe I'm getting confused! I've read so many threads over this last day that I might be wrong then so I'll retract what I said :)

Well hopefully you will soon be able to enlighten us Chris :D

Well I've only skimmed so dunno. Anyway, just downloaded those files and slightly corrected WB so they look closer (far from exact mind) and the noise does look closer between the D500 and D7200. I've also downsampled the D750 and D7200 files to match the D500 and there's not a lot of difference between the D500 and D7200

To be fair there's not a huge difference between them all. I think the noise handling Nikony are getting from their crop sensors is pretty impressive.

Apparently Tuesday but that's if I get one in the first lot! Still have the d7200 so will do some comparisons before selling it. Still haven't got my lens back though and would like to do some in situ comparisons out in a hide.

I've just called Jessops and been told that they haven't got a date yet but NPS members will be getting them first. She said they are due to get 80 units and have 55 orders so far, but told me to give them a call back in a few WEEKS! Called WEX too and they told me they are due to get some this week.

Are you NPU?
1st dibs go to NPS AND NPU :)

Nah I'm not and yeah I know they do. She told me that NPU (sorry it wasn't NPS she said, made a mistake in my previous post) get them first and when they start trickling in a few a week, they'll be reserved for NPU members...yet she also said they're getting 80 and have 55 orders so I'm not sure what she meant! But I wasn't expecting to hear "a few weeks"! On DPR forums someone linked to a UK shop which said they'll only be getting them in June due to the earthquake!

Whilst some cameras (Coolpix etc) are affected by the earthquake I haven't seen anything to indicate authoritatively that the D500 is affected and certainly it is already available and in the hands of users in the US.
