D700 on its way out; what next?

Hi guys

Am treading uncharted waters at the moment and could do with some advice.

My D700 has just passed the 150,000 actuations milestone. I have noticed that it fails to fire the odd shot here and there and so was wondering what I should do.

As I see it, my options are:

1. Put the camera in for service / repair. Will this do any good?

2. Time to invest in a new body - the D610 looks good.

3. As above but invest in a CSC - the XPro 1 or Panasonic GX7 look like contenders.

With 2 and 3 - is there any value in selling my D700 - what might it be worth?

Lots of questions, I know.

I do still have my D300 which has plenty of life left in it.

Probably d610 its a nice upgrade to d700, depends what you shoot and what your priorities are
 
Replace the shutter & have it serviced, should do the job and keep it going hopefully for another 150,000 shots.

I would think the D610 is more of a sideways move than an upgrade & some I've talked to still prefer the D700 to the D800.

There's some mad deals out there at present on the X-Pro1 with cheap prices, cash back, free lenses & other goodies. different retailers have their own different bundles so its worth looking around for a package you like, oh and it knocks spots of the GX7, in fact it knocks spots of most camera's apart from pro level full frame camera's & medium format.

I mainly use my D700 for weddings and live theatre work - for me the low light performance is critical and I think, based on reviews, that the 610 edges the 700. I am also attracted to the silent shutter promise of the 610!

I do really like my D700 and it has served me well; I just wonder if shelling out £400 - £500 is the best way forward - that's almost half of what a 610 might cost, and two thirds towards an XPro1.

Thanks for your thoughts on the GX7. There are some insane deals at the moment on the XPro1; I am sorely tempted to get one and see how it feels / performs - especially with the live theatre stuff I shoot! I would also like to see how it performs in the studio.

I mainly use my D700 for weddings... I personally wouldnt go for a CSC camera then. The AF is nowhere near as reliable as a D700, especially in low light.

I made the mistake of moving from a D700 to a D600, and I would not recommend anyone to do it. Yes the IQ is great, but in other ways (ergonomics and AF particularly) it really does feel like a downgrade. Obviously there are people who have made the move and are happy with it, but I really couldn't get on with the camera at all.

Nikon still havent ,in my eyes, made a true successor to the D700, which is why I shoot with a 5Dmkiii these days.

I have owned 5d mark iii d600 and d700, imo the d600 is the best of the lot. The d600 is good step up in ISO performance, all this AF is bad stuff is rubbish, its fine, its not quite as good at the d700 but its very good. Its dual card slot and the dynamic range is ridiculously good. Image quality is a good jump up from d700. and more megapixels too which you dont need but its nice.
 
I shoot field sports professionally and the AF on the D600 sucks compared to the D700, some Getty shooters still use 2 x D700's
 
I'd agree that the D600/D610 isn't a good sports camera. But for a wedding I've never had issues with the AF. I know the AF points are more bunched but I tend to focus then recompose anyway so it's no big deal. If you like back button focusing then that could be more of an issue.

Since OP likes the idea of silent shutter, let me add that the d610 shutter is quieter anyway. Way quieter than the clacky d700. Plus the dual card shots are a God send
 
D800 is the way forward. Or maybe a used D3s as low light is excellent there.

If you like the D700 (and i love it) there are still a few low mileage ones out there at around £850?

The D600/D610 - I think you're more likely to be unsatisfied with that as an upgrade versus satisfied.

I have to be honest, I think nowadays an upgrade to a d3s is a bad choice from an d700. I know its a great camera, but in terms of sheer IQ i'd go either the d610 if the focus points aren't an issue, or d800
 
Ok - have given this a bit of thought. Have decided to have my D700 serviced and repaired - I hear Fixation are good for this kind of work - and look at a CSC for my take about alternative. Question is, GX7 or Xpro1?

Thanks all - a surprise purchase of one of my photos for a book cover has secured it. X pro 1!
 
I got my XPro 1 - it is very lovely. About to head into the XPro 1 thread and ask advice on freebie lenses!
