Hi, I’m looking to get some primes for my D700, the aim is I want to travel light but have the best quality. I know the 24-70mm AFS is the most amazing lens in the world but it’s also a heavy b****r and not exactly discreet.

Has anyone used the 24mm AFD with the D700 or D3 and would it be a good choice for a wide lens? Also I’m thinking about getting the 85mm 1.8, but the Tamron 90mm macro has caught my eye, anyone with experience with both?

I wouldn't describe the 24-70 as the "most amazing lens in the world" - not by a long way. But in order tit your criteria I would suggest:-

Nikon 50mm 1.4G or Sigma 50mm 1.4 (the Sigma is said to have the edge)
Nikon 35mm 2
Nikon 85mm 1.4D
Nikon 105 2.8 Micro

Not shot any wider primes than these but these will fit most needs.

Yes I would. I had the 1.8 and decided to try the 1.4 for the wonderful bokeh. Best move I could have made - I really do think the 85 1.4 is a superb lens for portraits.

I have both, there is something about the images from the f1.4 that make it stand out from the f1.8, resolution is certainly superior, however the f1.8 is a superb lens.

Is it worth 3x the price of the f1.8, that is your decision.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, I know both 85mm lens are fantastic. But I'll more than likely get the 1.8 as I don't think I could justify the cost of the 1.4.
 
If you think the 24-70 is the most amazingly lens, my advice is to try more lenses :)

Seriously though, the Nikkor 35/2 AF-D is very nice, but its not stunning sharp wide open, and may not be an improvement over the 24-70.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is very nice indeed. The Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-S is going to seem ball-aching slow to focus compared to your 24-70.

The Tamron 90mm is superb.

If you don't mind manual focus, try to find a Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-S, probably the best wide angle prime you can buy in Nikon fit. The 55mm f/2.8 AI-S macro is awesome.

Regarding 24mm primes, I've just bought a Sigma 24mm Super Wide II (in Sony fit) and its very nice. I assume it'll be similar in Nikon fit, although I never tried one.

I think you'll find the 85mm 1.4 is a bit more than 3 times the price of the 50mm 1.8! More like 7 or 8 times the price. Bloody great lens though.

The f1.8 will serve you well, and I doubt I could justify the cost at today's prices.

Still one of my favourite primes in my collection though, sharp enough wide open for me, really close focus distance which lends itself to some interesting perspective to shots, and I always like the look of the images I get using this lens.

As an alternative to the 24-70, the older 35-70 f2.8D is a gem of lens, and a bargain used, however I have noticed it's second hand price starting to creep up lately.

I was was joking about that one, seems alot of people seem to rate it as on of the best. I have the Siggy 24-70mm HSM which is a great lens but abit on the heavy an bulky side.

The 35mm is not wide enough for my liking, I actually have the Tamron 17-35mm but it's abit too soft in the corners for my liking and also the vinergretting is quite pronounced wide open.

I'll investigate the Sigma 24mm, although I was looking on Flickr at some Nikon 24mm shots and it does appear to have the corner to corner sharpness.
