I dont have one, yet.... just pricing up right now.

What are the best options for a walkabout lenses for the Nikon D700?

If money's no object then I'm sure most people would recommend the nikon 24-70mm. If money is limited then the 16-85 lens you have already, provided it's not a DX lens, seems perfectly functional.

Tamron 28-75 would be my first port of call - super IQ, and small, light and very sharp.

If you can find one, I reckon a Tamron 24-135 is excellent too - excellent range, super colours, sharpness and constrast.

Nikkor 28-105 f/3.5 - f/4.5 AF-D is also excellent.

There is the Nikkor 24-70 off course, super optics, but IMHO too big for casual walkabouts. Ditto the 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S.

Nikkor 24-120 VR is reasonable, but unless you get very lucky, these are optical dogs.

:D thanks

I use a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8

Me too.

I've never even tried the (five times as expensive) Nikon version, but I really can't imagine it being five times better ;).

Well worth considering, at least :|.

I picked up a Sigma 24-70mm EX DG Macro recently from Jessops for £340 (I guess because of the new HSM version) - so far I'm pleased with it, quite big but did the job perfectly at a kids party I shot a couple of weeks ago...

This is strange, isn't it? If the OP were thinking of buying a full-frame Canon (eg a 5d Mk II), it would be very easy indeed to recommend the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS as the ideal walkabout lens. But Nikon apparently don't make an ideal walkabout lens for their flagship DSLRs.....

arguably the 24-70 is the ideal nikon companion, its just that you need a second mortgage to buy one

I agree. Nikon is very well sorted for crop format in the walkabout range, but not full frame. 24-70 2.8 is a lovely thing, but weighs nearly a kilo (as does the Canon version). The ideal cartabout. It's one of the things that stopped me going Nikon with a D700 outfit (though there were several other reasons).

That 24-105L Canon might only be f/4, but it's a lot lighter, has more range, and IS.

Started off with a Nikon 24-120VR (must have been lucky - mine was sharp enough for me!) but wanted something a bit faster so bought a Sigma 24-70 before the price went up (AND it was in Jessops sale!). Now lives on the front of the D700 unless I want/need something shorter or longer. It's not light but it's worth the weight - I would definitely recommend an Op-Tech neoprene strap to hang the combination off to spread the load!!!

My 35-70 f2.8 is a great walk about lens. So is a 50mm or a 60mm :)

I take back what I said about the 24-70mm Sigma earlier in the thread, put mine on my D700 earlier and it just cam up with "E E" where the F number would be. Great - its my daughters Christening tomorrow and I'm going to have nothing below 50mm, not the end of the world I know.

I called Jessops and they agreed to a full refund (lens is only 2 weeks old with less than 50 shots), typically it wouldn't work either of my camera's here, but when I got to the shop it was fine! Refund issued anyway, looks like I'll be ordering a Tamron soon too...

It would also be remiss of me not to mention that if you want a lens for "walkabout" (which I take to mean casual snapshots), you could buy a D40 + kit lens, for less than the price of some of the lenses options mentioned here. It might even be lighter too.

:D Good call, pd!

Which meaning of "lighter" were you thinking of, BTW ?

Lighter in weight; No (740g vs. 510g)
Lighter on the pocket; Yes (246GBP vs. more than 246GBP)
Lighter through the VF; No (f3.5-5.6 vs. f2.8)

There aren't many bargains around in the equipment world right now, but I think that for less than 250 quid new, the Nikon D40 must surely qualify as an exception :).

I have the 24-120 included in the d700 bundle from jessops £1999.
seems ok to me, but dont have anything to compare it with (yet)
how do I know whether its a 'dog' or not?
