Yes
I had been looking for a D300 but having seen what D700s are going for I have decided to push it and try and afford the D700 sooner rather than later (I had always planned to get the D700's replacement maybe next year).

Now if I do get the D700 I will not be able to change any of my glass for a while as I will be skint :)

So I will have the D200 and D700 with the following lenses

Nikon AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 VR DX IF
Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8 F2.8 G IF-ED
Nikon AF 50mm 50 F/1.8 f1.8 D

plus these that I use with the D1x

Tamron AF 55-200MM F4-5.6 LD macro
Nikon AFS 18-55 f3.5-5.6 VR DX
Nikon AF 50mm 50 F/1.8 f1.8 D

Now as far as I am aware the nifty fifty will work FF on the D700 and ALL the others will only work as cropped.

So the question is how good is the D700 cropped? till I can afford the new glass :)

Anyone got any examples?

Am I right with my list?

I know I could get the glass first then the D700 but I will be unlikely to have the money all in one go again for a while so it would be better this way.

What are the best lenses to take advantage of the D700? I am mostly interested in portrait work plus I wanted to get some wide glass (this is just for future reference). My two expensive lenses for the main camera, what FF equivalents are there and how much are they likely to cost plus how much are mine worth?

Sorry I don't have any examples, but I am sure you could imagine a really good 4mp photo. This is slightly too low for printing large or submissions to agencies.

Looking at your glass it looks fairly good:
Nikkor 105mm VR micro - FX compatible - my dream lens!
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 - FX - very capable

In fact you could survive with just these 2. I would sell the rest without even thinking (you might get around £600-700 for the 3 DX lenses). For that price you can pick up 35-70 f/2.8 AF lens (around £200, old, but very sharp) + 80-200mm f/2.8 AF (£300 used, some say better than 70-200mm VR). 17-35mm is an excellent wideangle, but you may be interested in Tokina 20-35mm f/2.8 for a fraction of cost. All sorted!

Btw. 105 VR is also probably the best portrait lens

Fantastic I thought the 105 wasn't FF but if it is then I can happily make do with that and the nifty fifty on the D700 whilst I upgrade the 18-200

If your 105 AF-S is the VR version then it is FX!

I have a suggestion, I hope you don't mind me budding in; why don't you sell your current line of DX lenses and buy FX ones?

Your lens line-up makes it very practical for the two bodies, but there is a lot of overlap in there! It is convenient, but I'd sell these ... Nikon 18-200VR, Nikon 18-55VR, Tamron 55-200, and the 2nd Nikon 50 AF-D.

For FX I'd get the Nikon 70-300VR and the Tamron (can't remember the exact model / range, but I think it's ..) 28-85 (Puddleduck has spoken well of this lens many times on his D700).

Thanks, I need to keep the 18-55 & 55-200 for the 2nd camera as a minimum plus the 50mm is quite handy there as this bag is kept separate from the other camera. This leaves the 105 and 50 which should already be FF with the main camera bag so the only spare lens is the 18-200.....

Now my most important range is 18-120 ish but if I have to delay getting part of it then I will. So maybe buying the 80-200 when I find one THEN selling the 18-200 and buying something in the 18-85 ish range might be best

I don't think its really viable to use DX lenses on FF.

It does work, but you are going to have a very dark viewfinder with vignetting, and the DX viewfinder mask doesn't really help much with that.

To me it makes much more sense you start building up a full frame lens collection first.. always lenses before glass... especially with a D700.

Excellent lenses are Tamron 17-35, Tamron 28-75, Tamron 24-135 (you won't find one of these), Nikkor 28-105... all are cheap and work very well.

Andy,

Is this the Tamron 28-75 you speak of?

Yes, but don't buy it from Simply.

I got one of mine from CameraKing (another marketplace seller in your link, its a Intro2020 / Tamron UK lens)

Yes, I would normally agree but if the 105 and 50 both work then I can use those full frame and I will still have the 18-200 on the D200. I can then sell the 18-200 to get new glass across that range that will work full frame too hopefully keeping them to f2.8 or better as well (if I can). If I start buying glass now for the D700 I might not be able to afford the D700 for a year.

With the Tamrom 28-75 at around £288 I should have about £150 left in my lens fund for something bigger than 75mm which I can then add to later. If I can save £100 per month then by about september I might be able to get something to fill the 105-200 void !

Tamron 24-135 (you won't find one of these).

Is it this one? It is listed as "Tamron 24-135 mm AF For Nikon"

I can get this for about the money that the 18-200 is worth.....

Thank you :)

As I'm in Saudi, I thought I'd have a look and see if I can find that lens here. I've heard you speak good about it a number of times.

I was wondering if it takes 77ø filters?

Can I ask where did you find that? And why is this lens so rare?

i think, though a search or puddleduck will confirm, it was made in limited numbers? Poss for an anniversary?

Thanks, for some silly reason I was searching for 28-135 :cuckoo: ... I don't know where I got that from.

Thats the chap, you can see it on my camera here:

Its a stunning lens, Tamron made this for their 50th Anniversary, and bascially they stuck two fingers up to Nikon and Canon with their "walkabouts" and outdid the lot :)

I can second that opinion, I found one 2nd hand in Carmarthen to use until the Nikon 24-70mm gets more sensibly priced and I get some very very fine shots on my D700. If you can get one at reasonable money I would snap it up. It's good enough for me to not consider the Nikon 24-70mm as my next lens purchase.

Well if I can get one for the same price as the 18-200 then it's worth doing. I think I will look at that. Then I just need some longer glass! :)

I'm with the new lineup brigade.
How about, keep the 18-200 and use it on your second body. Then you have a "walkabout" combo.
Sell any other DX lenses and the spare nifty. Get a wide zoom, Tamron do a nice 17-35 for good money then all you might need is a long zoom or even 300mm prime after a bit of saving.

Didn`t want to start a new thread for one question.

On the Tamron range, does Di mean full frame and Dii mean for crop bodies?

Thanks.
