Hi, my partners son wants to upgrade his camera at Christmas, what one of these would you say was the better of the two.

I had a D300 and loved it, the build quality is great. I upgraded to a D700 full frame, but I borrowed a friends D7000, the build quality is nowhere near as good as the D300. Other than that I would choose the D7000 on image quality over the D300. I loved it, the colours straight out of camera were much nicer. The extra pixels helped too.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses. It all depends on their uses.

I've owned both and would go for the D300 shooting sport/action and the D7000 for everything else.

That's exactly my opinion as well.

I assume he is looking at used s/h now these models don't appear in many places new.
I'm still using my D300 when I want exrtra reach with my long len's and have no complaint with image quality.
Only handled D7000 a few times But now the D7200 has replaced D7100 the later can be picked up at some really low prices.
I would suggest he goes to a used photographic dealer that sells used /s/h if possible and handles the various models as the handling of the newer models is different from the D300.
I'm pretty sure which ever model he goes for he won't be disappointed .:)

Completely agree. One of biggest noticeable differences might well be how they feel in the hand. The D300 is big and heavy, the D7000 a bit smaller and lighter. Real world IQ difference? Probably not a lot.

Might as well go for the D300s if you want a D300 - you get video with it!

the D300/D700 feel heavy when compared to more modern stuff

I would go for a low clicks good condition D300 ...... if he is happy with the weight ......... (I have both and much prefer the D300 especially at ISO's up to ISO400)

stick a 50mm f1.8 on the end of it and he will take some great shots

If he has any interest in wildlife then the D7000 is the one,i moved from a D300 to the D7000 and got higher ISOs with better results, especially if you start cropping.

to tell you the truth, unless he is seriously interested in putting an interchangeable lens system together he will get more use and equally good images from say a "bridge" camera

DSLR's are big and bulky ....... and even with interchangeable lens an Miro 4/3rds system gets very near to a DSLR

what does he have now and what are his interests?

Thanks for all your replies. He has a d3000 at the moment, but wants a newer camera for Christmas, he's a big 15yr old , so weight is no problem .As we live on the coast he takes more landscape photos than anything else, so a used d7000 may be his best option.

Not sure but have you checked out Hdew cameras if your looking at new they are doing the D7100 body only at a silly price new with 3 years warranty also D7000

I've owned and used both too in a professional capacity, in fact I still have a D7000 (which is about to be sold, hint hint lol). Build quality only matters if you abuse them, as I've never done so its never mattered to me. What does matter is IQ and DR, of which the D7000 wins hands down

So for me its a no brainer - of your choices the D7000 wins

(and I'm about to be selling one hint hint :D )

I've just given my much used D300 away, I have a D7100 and looking for something to replace the D300 when Nikon get their act together

But I would say go for the D300 if he is doing coastal landscape, I used mine in rain, snow hail, anything the weather threw at it and it survived,
I do mainly wildlife and it coped well, but having the newer body serves the fast moving etc creatures better

:agree:
I agree that the D300 is much better for weather proofing. It's also more sold and balances longer lenses better. I now have a D7100 and miss the D300 and it's build but the image quality, especially in low light, is better on the D7100.

Of the 2, possibly the D7k. Newer sensor & better dynamic range, BUT what about a used D700? Obviously depends on budget & what lenses he already has. (+ does he need to sell his D3k or is he keeping it?)

:plus1: for the D7000, although you can get a D7100 for not much more money.

I came from a bridge camera to a borrowed D90 and now a D7200 and whilst a bridge does have a lot going for it, comparable IQ isn't one of 'em.

D7k every time! And don't bother with d7100! I hated mine and sold it to go fx!

If ergonomics and build quality are important, then the D300. If the main priority is output quality, the D7000 is going to offer better ISO performance, and general overall quality.

Thanks again for your replies. I think he has settled on the D7000, his brother will inherit his d3000 . he has his own lenses but has the use of mine if he needs them.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention this so if not, mods please feel free to remove, but I'm going to be putting my d7000 on classifieds very soon so keep an eye out.

Just one other thought on this..

D300S still in production after many years, D7000 not.

There would be many reasons for this, but customer demand would be one of the main ones.

I have had D300 and s, D7k and 7100. The 300s is still excellent and well built. I find it's autofocus totally reliable and the camera is a workhorse. The 7000 was ok, but I found the autofocus too frequently unreliable with fast 'street style' photography whereas my D7100 is spot on. I still think the 300s has a nice semi pro feel but it's sensor in some situation loses against the 7100. My 300/s was good when I went full frame as many accessories are shared with the D700. Basically for me I'd go 7100 or 300s although the Quiet mode on the D7000 is the quietest of them all and that also might be a factor.
