price gap is widening on A - what is the real difference between these two ? which should i buy ? Given that if i go for 800 its extra for the lenses
 
When they are processed I can barely see a difference between the two. If you can get a good deal on any of them then go for it, the IQ is brilliant. I went for the D800 and some good glass.
 
D800 has a low pass filter, D800E has no low pass filter

Lack of low pass filter increases sharpness/iQ.

can this be reflective of value / performance ?

Having owned both. The E is sharper but thats it.You could just about get away with adding none to the E, where as the standard does need it.

I only payed 1/3 of the difference though due to it being a replacent and the standard not being in stock.

Would I pay the full difference ? probably not, theres not enough in it for me to justify the £400+ difference.
 
Price difference is around £250 now in the UK
£2299 for the E.
 
When I got the E, the difference in price was a lot smaller. If I was buying today, I'd go standard, but I love the idea that non E owners love to moan about it like it matters :P

I'm not a pro an on a budget so for me it wasn't to much thinking and not having any lenses before I bought it made it even more difficult in all i spend 2500 pound and I think that's me for a long time.
If I was a pro it will be another story all together :-)
 
I have diligently compared test images of the two on dpreview and found the difference in image sharpness to be marginal, not something I as a non pro user would care about. Then there is the moire issue. I think for general purpose photography the non-e is the more versatile camera.
 
If you are in any way interested in the video facilities don't touch the D800e
 
marginal gains are all you are going to get as the prices get higher and higher and the percentage in price difference does not equate to the same increase in IQ.
Is a D800 4 times better than a D7000, is a D800E 20% better than a D800 - probably not but only the buyer knows if it is worth it.

IMO going for the D800 is the right choice

The moire isn't an issue, I've seen no more than I did with my standard d800. Maybe just because I've shot twice the no. Of shots on my d800 over my E but I would even say I've never yet In countered it with my E and only a handful of time with my d800.

You have to remember that even the 5dmk2 or any camera will exhibit moire depending on the item. Take a shot of the pouch that the 24-70 or 70-200 comes in...

Same here - well under £300 of a difference at the time. TBH I did not know if the 800E was better, but with a relatively small price difference I knew I definitely would have hated to buy a D800 then wish I had got the 800E.

The price difference is OTT now. I find that I often crop shots quite heavily so prefer to have eveery little bit of sharpness I can get. That is my theory, anyhow.
Without the luxury of being able to compare a D800 and a D800E side by I will never know for sure if I could get "better" pics with one or the other.

Bottom line is that I really like my D800E and am glad I bought it.

BTW I found that you tube video referred to a few posts ago absolute torture. The guy in that is verbose in the extreme.
