hi all,

i recently used Toast Titanium to back up some DVD's in the toast format.
I backed them up straight to an external hard drive, and checked them afterwards that they worked.

However, I think my MBP went into standy whilst the external hard drive was still connected, so it was never ejected properly.

Now the files aren't there. I know where they were stored, but there is nothing there now.
The external HD is NTFS, I think I used a patch so that Mac could read/write files to it.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a data recovery program for Mac?

Thanks

djs

PS - There's actually a Zero KB file called "Photography" which is the folder they were stored in. The file type is "Alias", if that helps.
I've also tried this using windows (via vmware) and it says the folder which the files were stored are 'corrupt'

from the windows side you should be able to run a check disk which may help or find something.

external hdd? they should still be there. that's quite strange. I didn't think that external hdd's did anything like write caching that would bodge things up!

PCworld will do a data recovery for you.
I don't know of any mac software but the ext hdd will plug into any PC and software is plentiful. Putting them into a toast format though. can't help as I steer clear of proprietary formats where possible
good luck

confused also by the NTFS and MAC issue. wasn't sure those patches were the best solution

There a few recovery software apps that will recover data for you. Main thing to point out though is to install it onto a different hard drive than where the data is (shouldnt be a problem as your data is on external). May take an hour to scan an retrieve, but its worth it for lost data!!

EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional is what I use!

thanks for the replies!

i tried a 4 hour scan with the free RECUVA tool. but it found nothing in the folder that i told it to search in.

hmm, may have to ask techguys.

Just an update, to say it's sorted now.

I tried a few recovery programs that performed a 'deep scan', but found nothing.

But then did what crashtestmac said, a chkdsk. It took over 12 hours to scan it, but its recovered all 8 files!
Thanks!
