Decision, decision

I have been saving the pennies to buy a 70-200 f2.8 mark II, but today I have been offered a 70-200 mark I in an absolutely mint condition for £800.
Does the mark II really justify an another £1000, money which could be spent on a nice trip somewhere.
The lens will be used at times with x2 extender.
One side of me is telling me go for the best, the other tells me you are not a pro be reasonable.
Arghhh, don't know what to do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bonk:

Can you try it out? You may be disappointed with a 2x TC on anything other than a prime.

Might be worth a look at the mtf charts for the two and look for some comparisons online. Most new introductions have quite large improvements over the original but it will depend on your use. New would have a warranty which if spending £800 I would be thinking about in case of issues...

The 70-200 mk II with a 2x TC is a cracking combination and almost as sharp as the 100-400. Have a look at http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=313066

I'm guessing that the 1DsIII in the example won't be wildly different to what I'll see through a 5DII on that showing, though I don't use ISO 12,223 every day

I think a new 7D would make more sense. About the same for that as upgrading the 70-200, and my existing crop body is getting on a bit. Not quite the reach, but I'll get more use out of it I reckon.
