With the airshow season shortly upon us, I am looking into setting up a website, just my own little corner of cyberspace, to show obviously my pics, but I am also toying with the idea of guides, for the bases I go to, which will have pics of viewing spots, details of squadrons etc stationed there, scanner frequencies etc.

I have purchased two domain names, a .com and a .co.uk, now I need to work out which service to use.

I have read the guide at the top of this forum, and have had a nose around the links there, read a thread about issues with fotopic, so have now (kinda) narrowed it down to SmugMug or Clikpic.

Am I heading in the right direction, or has anybody any other offerings in mind?
 
I have used Fotopic for years and if you just want to show off your shots rather than set up a site for sales they are as good as any,the glitch earlier this year appears to have been just a glitch
 
My one concern with using a service like that is that more or less every clikpic site looks like every other clikpick site.

I'd probably go for something a bit more individual but it depends on your capabilities with websites, if you don't have a facilities to do your own you poss don't have much choice, in that case at least try to find a a system with a template a bit different from all the others, if that's possible.

(Just my own viewpoint)

I totally understand having something different, however, I have no clue with the technical side, i.e. coding etc, so wouldn't know the first thing, or where to start.
 
Will you be going to Duxford this year? I LOVE that place and intend to get myself there this yeas as i haven't been for quite a few years now.

Any other Airshows good for photographers?
 
if you go down the website route, you can have it so the .co.uk links to the .com automatically or vice versa
 
Can't wait for the airshow season to start, I missed all of last year. The irony is, I bought my d-slr to take pictures at airshows (after seeing the stunning shots over on UKAR) but since buying my d-slr I haven't been to one airshow!

As to the website, I guess is depends hpw much effort you want to put in, I can't coment on SmugMug or Clikpic as I haven't used them. I decided to go for the long winded route and learn html. It took a while, but gives good satisfaction in having total control, but it was very time consuming and annoying at times. If I had to start from scratch again I'd go for a generic set up just to get me up and runnng, and then if you feel like it, have a go at html.

Thats exactly how I got into photography.

Decided to go to airshows, then realised I would want to take pics, then looked into cameras, then realised a point and shoot would be pointless.

Went to Fairford last year, which got cancelled, and that was my only airshow last year, this year will be different :)

Completely agree here, HTML can be intensly irritating and takes a while to learn, however if you decide to put the effort in you will be rewarded with the site how you want it and not just have to "make do"!

There is a package you can buy, i think it's call Mr mysite or something similar (got a picture of a cartoon guy on the front in a suit)? I've seen some good results from that and know that some of the people that have set it up and got decent results can't tie their own shoe laces!
 
To move on from this, a feature I am looking into with the site I eventually end up with, is a viewing guide for the airbases I visit, which would include (hopefully) a map of the airbase, on which I could mark the spots that are good and accessable for photography, and maybe mark on the map with pointers, what to look for when trying to find the access points, done with pics taken by myself.maybe pics (if possible via for instance, google earth) and other info, such as what Squadrons and aircraft are based there, radio frequencies etc.

As you can see, just having ideas floating around, my question is this: Would any of the sites around (SmugMug Clikpic etc) cater for this, or are they just photo gallery sites?
