Delay in shutter

Morning all,

A question for you, I am currently using an Olympus E410, when i shoot in auto (i know i said a swear word), when i press the shutter button, the photo is almost instantaneous.

However, now that i am playing with the manual settings, i have noticed there is a significant delay of about 2 seconds from pressing the shutter button to the camera actually taking the photo (this doesn't include the shutter release time).

I wouldn't mind, but i am finding that during this time, i am moving a little and the shot isn't always as i took it.

The shutter speed is slow. Dont know about your camera but on my
D80 this happens when I try and get a correct exposure using the meter which say the shutter speed needs to be slow.

Sent from my HTC Hero using TP Forums

Take a pic in Auto and note the settings it selected (ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed).
Then put it in manual and select those same settings and shoot the same thing.. they should take the same amount of time between button pressing and shutter going off, they should also look identical.

I did that and the amount of time is different still between the Auto and manual settings, even when using the flas on manual, so it is exact.

Sounds like you have the self timer on. little button top plate left hand side has symbols for frame timer and remote settings by the side of it.

Nowt wrong with olympus, by the way....

Did have a look at it and nope, don't have the timer set.

Any other ideas peeps?

You sure about that? ;)

If you don't have the delay timer on, the shutter always opens immediately, and closes when the exposure is finished. If you have a two seconds speed set for some reason, ie it's very dark, that's how long it will take.

No exceptions.

My little P&S has a selectable two second delay, to avoid any camera shake when on a tripod slow shutter speeds.

Have another check.

You have Anti Shake (I think it was called, Can't remember) turned on - it locks the mirror up for 2 seconds before taking the shot, it's in the menu somehwere, sorry I can't remember where as my E520 is long gone.

Thanks gents,

When you mentioned that i thought yes i have got that on. What is the better option? On or off?

If you're using a slow shutter speed to shoot a static scene and the camera is on a tripod, box, bean bag or whatever turn it on, otherwise leave it off.

What it does is put in a delay between you pressing the button and actually taking the picture, to give time for any wobbles caused by the physical act of pressing the shutter release to subside.

As said above. Otherwise known as mirror lock, the idea is to minimise any shake caused by the mirror flipping up and returning. You may choose to use it with the camera on a tripod, otherwise, leave it off :)
