Just a really dumb question, do SLr cameras have the same annoying time delay when I press the button as our compact has? Drives me bonkers!
 
No they don't.
On a DSLR when you press the button the dealy is miniscule before taking.

It's why they are much better for fast moving work, and more accurate framing.
 
I'm guessing you are talking about the delay as it focuses before taking the shot. A slow lens probably will take as long as a compact but a fast lens with USM will be far quicker.
 
I think the OP might be referring shutter-lag, in which case no; a DSLR will offer a huge improvement over a compact (not sure what newer compacts are like - my 3yr-old Powershot has a lag of about 0.3seconds).

You'll also notice a big difference in time between switching the camera on to being ready to shhot.
 
Thanks for the replies - we have a Pentax compact that is about 4 years old, and I always miss my small children's smiles because by the time it has taken, they've stopped smiling! Very frustrating!!

Nobody makes a bad DSLR these days so spend some time looking at the other things yo might want in your kit in the future. Lenses, flashes, battery grips etc, as these make more difference.

There are more third party options open to Canon and Nikon owners than the others but unless you need something quite specialist it's not likely to be a big deal.

Go and see what feels right in your hand and take it from there. There are some great prices to bad had from people like Pentax, Olympus and Sony.
