Hi - i have a new laptop which is great as im now mobile. when i view my images though the screen is really bright. i cant find any information on how to change the brightness and set it permanently as it will default back to dell settings. hope someone can help.? many thanks in advance

You'll probably need to change it in your operating systems settings. Currently are you changing the brightness through the keyboard hot keys?

On all the Dell laptops I've had, there's a function key combination. Most are function ("Fn" or "Func" on the keyboard) and then either the up and down arrow keys, or the left and right arrow keys. It will need setting on both battery power and AC power.

The laptop should remember the setting you are using, unless you set it to ambient - in which case it will brighten and darken the screen depending on how much ambient light there is around.

You may need to have the Dell laptop driver pack installed for your laptop though for the function keys to work.

thanks guys - the fn key and arrows dont seem to make a difference!
would you know where the operation syst settings are? il have a look in the control panel?

also, would i need to calibrate my screen? i have my laptop next to my desktop and the colours are different, i would like them to look exactly the same. on my laptop everything looks a bit washed out/greyish, would this be due to the overly bright screen? thanks again

At a guess, I would say that you'll need to go into the advanced display options - either through control panel or by right clicking on the desktop, choosing "Properties", or if there is a GFX control panel (depends on the graphics adapter your laptop uses) choose that. If you go the properties route, you'll want the "Settings" tab, then "Advanced" and take it from there.

Is the laptop new? You might just need to download the laptop drivers (handles things like hotkeys and other laptop specific settings) from Dell - it's easy to do from their website.

outlore - yes it is new. i have been into control panel and looked at App & Personalization but it goes into great detail about screen resolution. dont really want to touch that cause i dont know what im doing. i dont have the option of "properties" on the desktop when i click.

all dells ive come across have the brightness controls on the up and down arrows, but they could be on the F keys, usually it should be fairly self explanitory from the pictures on the keys :)

drivers should not be needed for the FN keys to work.

it should remember what brightness it was last time you used it, unless you put the ac adaptor in when it defaults to full brightness.

if you need any more help just shout.

aaah, thank you. i have just seen the top row on keyboard and realise what you mean. yes it now is self exp! lol. thanks again, the fn key can have a rest now! jen

My current D630 does not have the ability to use Fn keys when installed with a non-Dell OS disk - understandable how would it know what to do with a key that is not on any other standard keyboard?

And, the D630 also doesn't default back to full brightness when plugged in - it should go back to what was set when the laptop was last plugged in. At least mine does!

you also need to go to the power option is control panel.....

tell it to max out on battery.

odd, we have D600, D610, D620, D630 (as well as the 800 series) and they all do as i described..

im pretty sure the FN functions are hard coded.

Could be the image you use for the OS, if it's as per Dell supply then they're probably built in, where mine are OS disks supplied by MS under a developer license so they can be used on any machine. I have to then manually install the drivers for an individual PC, and hardware

nope we use MS supplied volume licencing disks.. i cant say ive ever installed any of the dell supplied keyboard or touchpad drivers on any of my builds.. including my last laptop i built for me is a E6500 running W7 and that didnt need them either for the FN keys..

tis a bit weird that yours is different, maybe its a bios version thing?

Could be, can do some wierd and wonderful things...

Anyway - has the OP got it sorted out now?
