Depth of field question

Yes
I understand the majority about depth of field and apertures, but one thing i've been wondering, and thought would question, If you have a large aperture, i know it affects the depth of field distance wise, for example front of picture to back of picture, but does it affect side to side at all?

ie, if I was taking a picture of a group of people and there were several rows, with say f1.4, I am aware that if focused on front row, the back row would be blurred, but would the whole front row, the same distance to the camera, all be in focus?

Providing the people are exactly parallel to the sensor plane, then yes they will all be in focus. Technically the DOF across the frame is infinite.

Surely as the row of people stretched out from someone who was directly opposite to the lens, you would experience softening as the image expands in either direction?

You would want people standing in an ever tightening arc?

No that wrong. The DOF is flat. You may find the edges of the lens are soft, but thats not down to the DOF. If people were arc'd those closer or further away would be OOF.
