Difference between Nikon D90 and D5000 ?

I have been organising a set for a Nikon D90 in a popular photography shop, I really liked the price, with two good lens, a small flash, a eyefish and a gorrilapod (already have tripod and monopod), anyway the whole around 2000$, both lens have Af/Mf stabilised.

But I just noticed that Nikon launched their new D5000, I noticed the lower price, thought they still have the CMOS, live view and 12,3(fonctionable)MP, but the case looks cheaper, there are less fonctions but the orientable screen (which is really useless to me, even the live view is useless), I wonder what's the fuss about the D5000, it looks like a reflex oriented for family and amateurs (the price).

Just wondering if anyone had the chance to try one and the D90?

thanks a lot!

D90 all the way. Note that the D5000 loses AF from its body (the main negative out of a comparison of them both).

Not sure about Canada however in the UK the price of the D5000 has been set so close to the D90 it's laughable really. :)

Thanks a lot!

Well in Canada the D90 (with the manifactured 55mm which looks good as well!) goes for 1,200 CAD (no taxes), and I saw the D5000 for 900$ CAD, maybe it was advertised body only?

Anyway, I'm looking for something more serious so I will clearly go for the D90.

Interestingly here in the UK, the D5000 is more expensive than the D90!

Maybe some sort of advertisment technique, I will take a look before maybe it was the body only price.

But they usually do that, they set the bar high so people want it and then they drastically lower the price.

 :bonk:

I think it's safe to assume the D90 will probably go up in the next round of MSRP rises....

I kind of agree with that, I see only good comments about it, lots of freinds might buy it,

Hehe, I like the fact that nikon's body all look a bit the same but the size change, it looks like russian dolls when you have the whole collection

D90 is awesome. Built in motor is a bonus. I prefer the larger and better resolution screen rather than a tilt screen. Think the D90 has more buttons on the body etc too.

funnily enough i was in jessops about 2 hours ago and was looking at the D5000 and was suprised to see that with a kit lens and the D90 with a kit lens at exactly the same price. I dont see any reason to buy the D5000 over the D90 but there alot of good reasons to buy the D90 over the D5000.

I had a wee play with a D5000 and it may just be my imagination, but it actually felt more solid than the rest of the D40/D40x/60 bodied cameras  Not convinced about the flip screen though, I foresee all sorts of problems with that....

TBH i always thought the d40's and D60 wasnt as well built as the D50 but you cant really compare the d5000 due to price difference.

I quite agree, the D50 was better built, but regardless of the price difference the D5000 uses the basic D40/60 chassis....
