Different file types definitions?

Hi guys, I need help with definitions for JPEG, TIFF, RAW, PSD, PDF - why would we use these different file formats and in which circumstances? Its for an assignment, but iv been scowering over the internet and cant find much to help me with..

Im not asking you to do my assignment, Just a few hints n tips if possible!

I'll give you 2 things

RAW is not a file type just a generic name for the native output of each camera brand

Nikon= NEF
etc

Image types freely available info here

Plagiarism is were you copy other peoples written work and pass it off as your own.

But you dont need to know fancy words to know that that is wrong, so im sure you've got no worries on that front.
