I have an image of a gap between two objects, is there such a way of measuring that gap with software?

cheers

If you have a reference point. i.e a rule on the image. You could use Photoshop's rulers to measure the gap and interpolate the information from that.

Photoshop Extended has a Ruler tool that lets you make measurements, but I think it only refers to to points on the image, not the "real world"

Depends how much other information you have, if you don't mind it being a bit inaccurate and know/can find out the size of an object in the image you can work out the size of the gap. There are other factors that will affect it though, different lenses will distort an image to different degrees for example.

post the image, it would be the best bet.

If you know, or can estimate the length of one or more objects in the image you could use maths to figure the gap out depending on the angle of the photo to the gap.

I usually use the rectangular box tool in photoshop, reading the x and y (horiz. and vert.) pixel measurements from the info tab (usually in the top RHS with the histogram and other stuff).

Providing you know the actual size of something in the image you can work out how many pixels there are per mm and you're sorted.

Obviously this isn't super-accurate and you have to be aware of the effects of perspective etc.

thank you for the info much appreciated. so in real life theres not much way other than tape measure.

cheers
