Beginner Disappointed with scans from 80s negatives

I’ve recently scanned some color negatives shot in the 80s using a Practica PLC3. I used a Canon 8800F flatbed scanner, but the results look quite poor compared to modern digital cameras.

Is this typical for this setup, or am I doing something wrong? Would love to hear if this is a limitation of the scanner or the film itself.

Just looking into doing this and see the Plustek scanners mentioned a lot………

Results are likely to be poor, depending on film and lenses used. I used to use medium format in the 80s because 35mm wasn't good enough, and I'd consider the image quality of a modern full frame mirrorless to be slightly better.
