…and I thought it was a rather interesting shot!

You've caught it in a great position Daniel, just at the point of entry but looking at its ar*e isn't very flattering :p and although you look to have frozen the water droplets indicating a fast shutter speed, it does look a little soft, maybe missed focus?? :)

I certainly hope it's diving, because if it's landing, it's going to be a bumpy one!
Nailed it with the timing, and a very unusual angle.

There are two points here:
  1. At the speed things were going, given it did not share
its intentions first, I had no time to tell it to turn around.
So it was pretty much a case of "take it as it comes".
  2. I still have, in many cases, great difficulties to be obeyed
by wildlife… I may be lacking some kind of authority! :ROFLMAO:

Yes, fast shutter speed and, on top of being a vertical dive, the
bird was a tad too close to the camera, filling the frame. This is
another lucky shot but I see it is sharp on my screen.

Thanks for your comment, Phil.

I don't remember how the story ended or maybe my eyes were
busy on the back screen and did not see the end of it but you're
right about the bumpy scenario I guess

Thanks Paul for dropping by! :)

Nice catch Daniel:clap::clap::clap::clap: I was at the park pond yesterday and the Gulls were swooping in like this dipping and swooped away again:) there was not enough light for bif though.

Hi Daniel,

Welcome back to the forum, it's been a while, good to see you back :)

Unfortunately though, for me anyway, this would've been in my recycling bin. Looks like you had some nice light though which would've made a great difference had the gull been facing the (right?) other way? (y)

So I know where to look for you on the
next sunny day! ;) Thanks Charles!

sorry me too

I hesitated to post the shot as it was taken on
November 20, 2016.

The end of January 2017 statement recorded
53 paying takers of the picture worldwide since
on the Publisher's list (end of November '16).

My
question is: Why is it really that bad?

In my opinion, it's a random shot that anybody can get. With no symmetry to the shot either I would've binned it. But that's just me. Nothing interesting to me, unless you like the backside of birds! :D

You know I'm not trying to sound harsh, it's tricky to convey the intended tone in type!

It's the reason I haven't commented on your duck bobbing in the other thread that people seem to like. It has nice light in that pic. It's another type of shot that can be taken anytime, especially with Swans, spending most of their time bobbing than on top of the water :D

Again, please don't take this the wrong way, just my opinions on what's wrong with it (IMO) (y)

Daniel, one question I have to ask, if 53 people have bought this shot and you like it, why offered it up for critique but then not be happy with the crit received, why not offer it up in the 'Photos for Pleasure' thread??

Like Wez said, I don't want you read this and think I've wrote it in an aggressive manner, it really is a genuine question :)

Not happy? On the contrary! :):):)

I thought the shot has the interesting split second before
event that I would never have thought possible to synchro-

nice with… but by pure luck as it happened to me.

This section is, I think, a birder section. So most of these
birders can better tell me, like you did, that it is just a com-
mon take, easy to get and what not

If anyone has more luck than I then OK but I got this one!

Again, I did not feel any negative vibes from your post but
you both seem to have more luck than I.

As said many times before: I am not a birder, just a photo-
grapher that LOVES to shoot at the marsh when I have time.

Very happy you popped in, don't worry!

It would definitely be a keeper for me. I think it has a quality about it. My only criticism is that I would crop some of the water above the tail, that concentrates the mind on the Gull appearing to be kissing its reflection with the Gull and reflection filling the frame in an inverted triangle. It does not bother me that its not a conventional shot. I like it:) just my three pence worth.

It would have been a keeper for me too Charles because, as I said above, it was captured right at entry point, very good (y) but it would have gone into my 'record shot' file and probably been posted in the communal thread, not up for crit :)

As most of my work is for publishing, I render my pictures
to accomodate art directors, publishers and such so they
may use my shots in almost any way they may think of.

The more latitude I give them, the more chances I have to
sell or rent the pictures. In this case, this was left as D810
full frame as they set titles on the page.

…but I get your point.
