Do you get 'bad' Nikon 24-70's?

No
Considering one of these lenses but at the mo a bit pushed to buy new. I know we often hear of bad Tamrons or Sigmas or contrary, people saying 'I was lucky and got a sharp copy'. What about these Nikons...is quality control such that they all come good from the factory... I guess secondhand could always be a risk from knocks etc.

My first was nowhere near as good as the one of I have now. So yes, you can get bad ones. But by all accounts they are rare. Canon ones are much more common :D

I'm toying with the idea of buying one of these today.....

Online with Jessops they're £1189, £40 off the instore price and with next day delivery.

I've used three now and recently bought my own personal one through a Hong-Kong retailer as I was confident that the liklihood of a dodgy one was insignificant enough to warrant the risk of not having a UK guarantee...

There was a minor issue with a possible light-leak around the focus window when used under certain conditions (long exposure - 5 secs or more - and very bright studio flash/strobe/light-source up close - 0.5m or closer) but that's now been addressed and you'd most likely never experience it anyway.

Cheap fix is: if you're ever shooting under those exact conditions with an older 24-70, put some black tape over the window.
If you're really worried, then Nikon will apply the fix for a small handling fee...(a slightly wider focus-scale plate is installed in place of the original one).

Sharp from 24 to 70. Outstanding color rendition. Excellent performer. Fantastic lens overall. There is a reason it is part of the trinity.

I've rarely seen anyone write on any forum that there are "bad" ones they get with the 24-70.

Bad copies of lenses in general from all manufacturers? I've never had the experience of having a "bad copy" and to be honest, I think some folks milk that excuse for other reasons.

I guess the possibility exists but I'm sure if you pick up a 24-70 used you will be impressed.

I would kill to have one. I have the sigma version, which is good for the cost, it recently got recalibrated by sigma FOC as it started front focusing, so while it was away, I hired a nikon version - just gorgeous, penny saving is well under way and as others have already said, you cannot absolutely guarantee a good one, but the chances are pretty high all told.

Here you go - there are bad ones.

But when the second copy of the lens is a dream to use and the first one was a PITA how does that constitute an "excuse"

Not if it's soft.

:bang:

Great, you count as one complaint other than the light issue people. :D

I used the words RARE and SOME. Don't take it personally. It wasn't directed at you specifically.l

I know Wail here had a dreadful sample that backfocused at 24mm.. he might chime in. Got fixed by Nikon.

I've seen a few and all have been spot on. QC seems to be very high with this lens.

Well I've just got back from Jessops with one of these, not concerned about QC because I know issues will be few and far between with this lens, will report back though. If it works as good as it looks and feels, then there will be no problems whatsoever.....
