Location Do you know where this found film photo was taken?

Hello,

I just developed a roll of Verichrome which had four images on it. My best guess is it had been in the camera for about 50 years, certainly no more.

Anyone know where this town is please?

On the right is Ivy Cottage bed and breakfast. The car in the foreground is a blue Ford bearing the registration PVY 355P, the last time a log book was issued for it was 1991. In the distance is a church or possibly a cathedral.
In the second picture the hoarding reads “Happiness is a warm earpiece”. Was that an advertising slogan from the 70’s?

PV registrations were Ipswich, I think. That cathedral should be familiar to someone. The road markings show West | North & East

It is the "VY" that you need to search, and that is for York/Leeds.

And it looks like York Minster in the background.

Have you tried downloading it into Google Lens? My rson told me about it and it is accurate most of the time.

Don't bother. It says the first photo was taken on Whitworth Rd, Rochdale.
I lived on that road for nearly 50 years and can assure you - it isn't there!!

The first image is taken from outside 33 Fishergate.
The second image is probably taken from somewhere along Fith Avenue.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner. Very well done that man! Mr Google tells me 33 Fishergate is known as Ivy cottage. I had looked at that corner yesterday after you said York Minster but with all the new builds I wasn't sure. Looking again this morning and checking the property name seals the deal.



Peterbourgh was a good guess, I can see why one would think that.

The camera I took the film out of was a basic box camera from the 60's and only had four photos taken on the roll but the composition is deceptively deliberate, walls are carefully lined upright and leading lines used. It seems the photographer took four distant views of York Minster from more or less all four sides and must have travelled round York a fair bit to do so. Quite a lot of effort for what seems a deliberate project only to then abandon it.

Realising I should have done this first of all I have now run the four photos through an AI restoration, which has done a pretty good job. Here are the results.
