Do you think they fixed without telling?

Yes
This thread is also to leave a positive feedback on Sigma UK for their great service.
The story goes like this. I bought my Sigma 1.4x TC last July, to use with my 120-300/2.8, and the results where horrible. They were VERY soft wide open, and there was a pronounced ghosting effect in the images, always on the right hand side of the subjects. I thought that I was just expecting too much from a zoom, but then when I saw results from the same combination I realised that there must be something really wrong with mine. So, a few weeks ago I started talking with Sigma UK on email (some guy called Ricky, replies on the same day) and I've been told to send the TC over.
I get a letter a few days later saying that they received the tc but that it was a grey product (which was a bit of a shock for me because it was from a UK seller) and that any work done would be chargeable, and that even checking it for me is a gesture of good will. Anyway I thanked them and said fine, just send me the bill. A week and a half later I received a parcel, and to my surprise it was my TC, nicely packaged, with a delivery note, stating in the work carried out section: "NO FAULT FOUND TO MANUFACTURERS STANDARD, reset, check & test, NO CHARGE".

I didn't do any thorough tests on the TC, but the ghosting effect that I was witnessing before I sent it is gone, and it looks quite sharp now, even wide open!

Don't know what they mean by "reset, check & test", but there is something they did that fixed this TC. Anyway, kudos to Sigma UK for a very fast turnaround, 2.5 weeks, with constant communication, and if they did a free job, then I'm a very happy customer indeed!

I've dealt with Ricky before with my Sigma 300mm f/2.8 which needed re-calibrating... they didn't charge me anything, even though I couldn't prove that it was in warranty (it was though!).

Sigma are brilliant :-)

I too have dealt with Ricky at Sigma before - very nice and helpful and a big thumbs up from me.
I will never be put off buying Sigma as they have always provided a very professional service to me.

I must say that I am indeed very pleased with their service! They didn't even charge for postage! Even though there is a lot of talking about their QC on the internet, I bought 3 Sigma lenses and 2 TCs, and the rest were spot on, even the 10-20 that is the lens that got the most attention in the photographic community on QC issues, was perfect from day one, and still is after more than 3 years of usage.
Now, I wont think twice of buying sigma, because even if a lens needs recalibration, I can wait for 3 weeks and get it back perfect, even though in my opinion, all the fuss about QC issues is just over exaggeration.

That is good service.
Surprised they touched a grey product.
If it was a grey product there should not be a Sigma warranty certificate with it.

There seems to be a lot of Net gossip about alleged QC issues with Sigma lenses BUT when you bear in mind that :-

The EX range have a 3 year warranty

Sigma have a very good repair / calibration service

They are often a 1/3rd of the price of the equivalent Canon/Nikon etc lens

For a non-pro they give superb value for money

i had a sigma 105 2.8 ex that i'd had about 8 years. when i got my 40d it wasnt auto focusing with the lens, got in touch with sigma they said it needed a new chip to bring it up to date and that it would be £10.got the lens back a week and a half later no charge they did the work for nothing :)

Nothing but praise for Sigmas customer service from me...........

I am really confident in buying Sigma. Even if I get a duff one, their turnaround is quite fast (Canon is about 6 weeks), and it's really worth the wait, since they do some brilliant lenses for a fraction of the money paid for Canon or Nikon.
